With an all-new integrated Tiled Arc GPU design, hybrid cores, and Intel 4 Process node architecture, Intel’s 14th Gen Meteor Lake-S CPU lineup promises a new era of performance.
Earlier rumors suggested that the Meteor Lake CPUs might only be limited to mobility platforms, similar to the Broadwell, Cannonlake, and Tiger Lake chips which saw minimum action on desktops.
However, there might be some good news awaiting.
Twitter user @momomo_us published MEI (Management Engine Interface) drivers, which claim the Meteor Lake chips will be headed for the consumer desktop PC platform.
The Intel Meteor Lake-S series CPUs will feature the first fully tiled chip design. It will offer up to 4 Tiles on the same package connected through a host of EMIB and Foveros.
The chip will feature a whole new level of graphics with the Xe-HPG graphics architecture, which will enhance support for DirectX 12 Ultimate and XeSS.
It will have CPUs, GPUs, I/O dies & cache dies, altogether regarded as the Tiled GPU/ Next-Gen Graphics Engine, connected, and offers boosted performance and power efficiency.
The socket interface to be used for the Meteor Lake CPU is undisclosed. Some expect Intel to use a different socket given the new design of the tiled chip compared to the hybrid Alder Lake & Raptor Lake CPUs.
According to Intel, the 14th Gen Meteor Lake CPUs will be based on new tiled architecture, implying that the company will invest in chiplets wholly.
The Meteor Lake series has three main tiles—
- IO Tile
- SoC Tile
- Compute Tile: Comprises CPU and GFX Tile
The Compute Tile was one of the first sections of the chip to tape out and achieve Power-On.
The CPU Tile will use an all-new hybrid core design of Redwood Cove P-Cores and Crestmont E-Cores.
It will allow higher-performance throughput at a lower TDP. The CPUs will require 5-125W, from ultra-low TDP mobile to high-end desktops, offering ~20% improvement in performance per watt through EUV technology.
Although Intel had initially revealed Meteor Lake prototypes & early units in mobility flavors, the devices will be manufacturing ready by Q4 of 2022. They will be available to the market in early 2023.
