Intel Arc A380 desktop GPU outperformed by Radeon RX 6400 in gaming tests

Intel promised that the Arc A380 GPU will have ‘25% better performance per yuan’ than its competitors. The Arc A380 GPU just falls short of this number in its first independent gaming tests. A user who tested the card on a mid-range Intel Alder Lake system with Core i5-12400 CPU, B660 motherboard and DDR4 memory, compared it with NVIDIA RTX 3050, GTX 1650, and AMD RX 6500XT, RX 6400.

Even though all of these are entry-level GPUs, the Arc A380 is still outperformed by even the Radeon RX 6400 in gaming performance. The A380 features a full ACM-G11 GPU with 8 Xe-Cores, and 6GB of GDDR6 memory across a 96-bit bus which is a considerable upgrade over the 4GB VRAM offered by its competitors. The particular model in use for the test was clocked at 2.45 GHz (boost) and the memory was configured for 15.5 Gbps.

Well, the good news is that the Arc A380 is faster than GTX 1650 and RX 6400 while also being barely faster than the RX 6500XT in the 3DMark tests. This goes for both Time Spy and Port Royal tests. In this ray-tracing test, the A380 scored almost twice as high as AMD Navi 24 GPUs, but the NVIDIA GTX 1650 card was still 3.7x faster in this particular test.

The real problem with the Arc A380 is its results in gaming performance. When tested at 1080p across games like League of Legends, PUBG, GTA5, Tomb Raider, Forza Horizon 5 and Red Dead Redemption II, the Arc A380 was outperformed by the RX 6400 in all the tests. It doesn’t even meet the promised 25% mark as it offers 21% better performance per yuan than the RX 6400.
This is because the Arc A380 will be sold at 1030 yuans which is cheaper than the 1190 yuan price of RX 6400.

The roughly $153 card produces rather disappointing results even though it uses the new ACM-G11 chip compared to the old Navi 24 chips in RX 6400. The Arc A380 has already been launched in China, and it seems that the drivers are still not mature enough to get the best out of Intel’s new GPU. If this performance trend goes on, Intel’s flagship A780 will struggle to keep up with RTX 3060 Ti. You can check out the full Arc lineup here.

With these disappointing results, Intel will be thrashed when it enters the GPU market as NVIDIA’s 4000 series and AMD RDNA 3 GPUs are right around the corner too. We’ll have to wait and see how the other GPUs in Intel’s Arc lineup follow through with expectations but so far it’s not looking good.
