Inside the World’s Toughest Prisons is a British crime docuseries that airs on Netflix. The series divulges the inimitable outlooks of prisoners in diverse realms and cultures and the various methods in which their safety is maintained.
Netflix acquired streaming rights of the show from season 3 onwards. The show first released on April 20, 2016 on Viacom’s Channel 5 in the U.K. 2017 saw a second season, and its third one premiered on December 18, 2018.
Rest assured, one will never think of prison the same way they do, after watching the hard-hitting sequences and bone-chilling episodes of the show. Here’s what we know about its fourth season so far.
1. Premiere Date And Highlights
Inside the World’s Toughest Prisons premieres on Netflix on July 29th! The popular series announced its fourth season through its official Twitter account earlier this month.
Paul Connelly (season 1) and Raphael Rowe (season 2 & 3) serve as the hosts of the series. They take their audience inside some of the most infamous prisons, all the while facing dangerous threats, mob conflict, and mutiny.
2. Series Overview
The show revolves around undercover probing journalists traveling to different locations to explore the prison facilities. Amongst the facilities visited are those in Brazil, Papua New Guinea, Ukraine, and Belize.
In the first season, Paul Connelly volunteers to spend time in the Honduras’ Danli Prison where the harshest prisoners are equipped with acquired weapons and act as enforcers for the dazed sentries.
He next spends a while at Poland’s Piotrkrow Prison where the country’s most toughened treacherous criminals live isolated for 23 hours in a day. He moves to Rizal Jail, Philippines, where inmates perform dances and cook for each other.
In the second season, Raphael visits and shoots in Brazil’s gang-infested Porto Velho Penitentiary, where he spends time acting as both a guard and a convict.
His next assignment carries him to Ukraine’s Zhytomyr Prison, with very thin security where prisoners are allowed to roam freely on the premises with potentially dangerous weapons.
3. Season 3 Recap
The third season takes Raphael to far-flung Costa Rica’s La’Reforma Jail, by far the most ghastly and menacing. He journeys onto Bogota, Colombia, and spends a terrifying week in the capsuled fortress-like Narcos Penitentiary.
From there he travels to Romania’s Gypsy Prison, where inmates and convicts include rapists, serial contract assassins and executioners alike. He moves onto Norway’s Halden Prison, a faultless jail which does things differently without condescending a convict.
4. What’s New In Season 4?
The locations throughout! In the fourth season of this investigative series, journalist Raphael Rowe takes viewers inside dangerous prisons in Paraguay, Germany, Mauritius, and Lesotho, all while living like a prisoner himself.
5. Official Trailer
There have been short trailers of each location released on the show’s official Twitter handle. Although there is no concrete, encapsulating trailer as yet, the shorter ones can be watched here:
6. Official Poster
The official poster was revealed on the 16th of July, 2020, through the Twitter-verse.
7. Expected plot
With the perpetually overcrowded Tacumbu prison in Paraguay posing threats to his safety and life, and the Schwalmstadt Maximum Security prison in Germany trying to reform its inmates, this season will definitely be worth the watch.
