New Indiana Jones 5 set photos have teased the return of a young Harrison Ford, possibly as part of a flashback. The final movie’s filming began after much delay and will be just in time to mark the celebration of Raiders of the Lost Ark’s fortieth anniversary.
Although original Indiana Jones star Ford will be returning for the last stint, it seems a de-aged version of his iconic character might also be featured in the upcoming movie. Set photos released by The Daily Mail have revealed that a stunt double wearing a mask of a much younger Harrison Ford was spotted during the production on the North Yorkshire Moors.
The set vehicle shown in the pictures featured a Nazi-era steam engine which suggests the movie will likely take place during World War II. Not much is known about the film as of now, except that actors Boyd Holbrook, Mads Mikkelsen, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Shaunette Renee Wilson, and Thomas Kretschmann have been cast in undisclosed roles.
However by the time the film releases in 2022 Ford will be 80 years old which means there will be quite the time jump for his former character.
Although the idea that Lucasfilm and Disney are interested in including a de-aged Jones shouldn’t come as a surprise, and neither is it out of the realm of possibility. The latter began experimenting with de-aging actors digitally to play younger characters since 2010’s Tron: Legacy, which saw actor Jeff Bridges go through a similar procedure for the role of Clu.
The studio implemented the same technology for Johnny Depp’s younger version in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and many other films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well, including Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel. More recently, it helped Mark Hamill reprise his role as Luke Skywalker, looking like the version in Return of the Jedi in The Mandalorian’s Season 2 finale.
The scene being filmed could perhaps serve as the film’s opening shot calling back to 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, which began on a young Indiana Jones who was played by River Phoenix. The younger version of Jones is from the original film trilogy, and the adventures he is on could set up the main plot for the fifth installment.
But with Indiana Jones 5 slated to be the final movie in the franchise, a flashback sequence with the titular character fighting Nazis might be a fantastic way to go out with a bang.
