Indiana Jones 5 director, James Mangold, explains that the film went through rewrites to address Harrison Ford’s growing age, making for a proper goodbye to the character and franchise from the actor.
Disney announced the film’s development in mid-2015 after it added Lucasfilm to its property, featuring the return of Ford’s Indiana Jones and John Rhys Davies’ Sallah. Other new cast members include Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Boyd Holbrook, Thomas Kretschmann, Toby Jones, and Antonio Banderas.
In an interview with Empire, Mangold explained how the film went through several rewrites to accommodate the story of a “hero at sunset,” referring to Ford and his character’s advancing age. Read his full quote below:
It became vital to figure out how to make this a movie about a hero at sunset. The issues I brought up about Indy’s age were not things I thought were being addressed in the material being developed at the time. There were ‘old’ jokes, but the material itself wasn’t about it.
The director added his reason for doing so was to not “pretend it’s not there” and “fly straight toward that.”
To me, whatever your greatest liability, you should fly straight toward that. If you try to pretend it’s not there, you end up getting slings and arrows the whole way.
Mangold took over Harrison Ford’s last outing as the gun-slinging archaeologist after Steven Spielberg handed him the reins despite heading the director’s role for the franchise since its debut.
Mangold’s comment about taking Ford’s age and embedding that in the script, making sure the movie correctly highlights the end of a grand adventure, proves that the ending will be as spectacular as the beginning.
While most of the film’s plot and relevant details are under wraps, we know that even though Ford won’t return to the franchise, Disney will continue Indiana Jones’ legacy some other way.
According to Disney, the upcoming fifth instalment of the Indiana Jones film series will premiere in theaters worldwide on June 30, 2023.
