The fifth installment in the Indiana Jones film series is Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. It is set to hit theaters on June 30, 2023, and fans awaiting the movie have some great news to celebrate!
The final movie of the franchise, Indiana Jones 5, is the first and only film in the series not directed by Steven Spielberg and not written by George Lucas. Instead, they both took up roles as executive producers. At the same time, filmmaker James Allen Mangold, known for his work in Girl, interrupted (1999), Wolverine (2013), and Logan (2017) (among others), took up the helm as the director and co-writer.
This has created uncertainty in the fandom, with fans unsure about how the last Indian Jones movie will turn out. However, with this latest news, there is nothing to worry about anymore. Steven Spielberg has spoken his approval!
In a recent statement at the Time100 Summit, Steven Spielberg, ace filmmaker, praised Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny as a good Indiana Jones movie. He said he was proud of the James Mangold directorial and absolutely loved the movie.
“I just had that experience two nights ago. Bob Iger had a screening for a lot of the Disney executives, and I came to the screening along with the director James Mangold. Everybody loved the movie. It’s really, really a good ‘Indiana Jones’ film. I’m really proud of what Jim has done with it.”
1. Steven Spielberg Impressed by Indiana Jones 5
At the 2023 Time100 Summit, Jurassic Park director Steven Spielberg commented on his experience watching Indiana Jones 5 at a screening for Disney executives.
After speaking highly of the movie and Director James Mangold’s work in the film, he further expressed how impressed he was by saying, “When the lights came up, I just turned to the group and said, ‘Damn! I thought I was the only one who knew how to make one of these.”
The world-renowned filmmaker was associated with the Indiana Jones franchise from its first movie in 1981. The 40-year-old franchise’s last release was in 2008 – ‘The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.’ The movie was the second highest-grossing film internationally in the year, despite mixed reviews from the audience.
The film was announced to get a sequel which would also serve as the final movie of the franchise. However, the role of director was passed on to James Mangold.
2. James Mangold has Once Again proven Himself
Director James Mangold is one of the most well-known directors of today. With movies such as Ford v Ferrari and Logan under his belt, his addition to the crew of Indiana Jones as its director was thrilling news. Even then, as Mangold had to replace Steven Spielberg, audience was slightly skeptical.
However, with Spielberg’s recent assurances, we know that Director James Mangold has proven his ability as a filmmaker once more. There is no need to worry about how the fifth movie will fare.
3. Indiana Jones 5 gives us a younger Ford Harrison
Indiana Jones 5 will feature our favorite globe-trotting archeologist Indiana Jones, as a younger version of himself. Old footage and de-aging technologies on actor Harrison Ford will have the younger protagonist occupying the first 25 minutes of screen time.
In an interview with Empire, Director James Mangold revealed that the film’s opening sequence would feature scenes set in 1944 (with Nazis, yes!) while it would primarily be set in 1969.
The film is set against the backdrop of the Space Race. In the movie, Jones is uneasy over the fact that the U.S. government has recruited former Nazis to help beat the Soviet Union in the competition to make it to space.
The film stars Harrison Ford for the last time as beloved Indiana Jones and also features Antonio Banderas, Mads Mikkelsen, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge in leading roles.
James Mangold gave one of the best farewells to Jackman’s Wolverine in Logan, let us hope he does the same for Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
