An adventurer meets a mysterious Ayakashi and finds a companion in episode 2 of In/Spectre season 2 titled “The Value of Flesh.”

The episode begins with an unfortunate betrayal and near-death of a snow adventurer who receives a miracle in the form of a Yuki-Onna who saves his life in exchange for half his money, a great deal.

The following ten years of his life prove very difficult for him, filled with betrayals and turns for the worse, but on encountering the Yuki-Onna yet again he finally finds something in his life that isn’t a disaster.

Episode 3 Speculation

The murder of his ex-wife will be investigated next episode. Since Yuki-Onna cannot provide any testimony for him without being revealed to the police, it will be pretty difficult for the main character of this story.

It will likely end up with some framing on him. Still, Kotoko will probably get involved upon request by the Yuki-Onna and manage to get to the root of the whole situation and clear it up for everyone, dealing with appropriate justice.

Recap of Episode 2

The episode begins with a snow adventure and one of the hikers falling off the cliff and is on the verge of death when he finds an illusion that says he is about to die. It introduces itself as a Yuki-Onna, and he is in disbelief.

It shows its powers as it covers them both in a snow globe and helps the dying adventurer since she rather fancies his looks and feels sympathy for him since he is so young. She asks for half his money in exchange for saving his life.

She teases him and asks him to apologize for calling her ugly, and they exchange conversation with plenty of jokes and taunts. The night passes in peace as morning arrives, and the adventurer manages to survive.

She takes him in her arms as they soar through the skies and approach the sunrise, and she makes him promise that he won’t reveal what happened this night to anyone else. Meanwhile, the other adventurers lie in worry about him.

He walks in through the front door and outs his partner immediately for pushing him off the cliff, and it is revealed that it was because of a woman he had a crush on. He lies in the hospital bed as he recovers from the incident.

Even after all this, he still wants to go mountain climbing. We skip to the future where he comes across Yuki-Onna again as she eats ice cream on a side bench. He approaches her and reminds her of the incident.

She immediately goes into an outburst about him revealing the details of that incident, but he promises that he didn’t say it to anyone else. She is flustered at the fact that he still remembers her from ten years ago.

Ayakashi doesn’t differentiate purely through appearance but also sees through to the spirit and thus remembers people more easily. He talks about his life, full of betrayal in his life and even in his family.

They decide to go grocery shopping together, and the Yuki-Onna repeatedly visits him 2-3 times a week. They go to town together and have meals together, too, living a life of peace.

They talk about the folktales in which Yuki-Onna are represented much more differently than the one in front of his eyes, and she says that not all yokai are as lovely as she is; some of them are much eviler in intentions.

She talks about the Goddess of Wisdom and boasts of her achievements, and he is shocked that such a person is a human. They even play games together, and he talks about his lonely life since everyone fears him.

She offers to spend the night with him since he must be missing his wife, and he refuses her as a man with strong morals. The morning begins with a visit from the police as his ex-wife has been reported as murdered.

Yuki-Onna almost reveals herself to the police but, in time turns herself into a rabbit and tricks them.

About In/Spectre: Kyokou Suiri

In/Spectre (Kyoko Suiri) is a novel series written by Kyo Shirodaira and illustrated by Hiro Kyohara (Vol. 1) and Chasiba Katase (Vol. 2 onwards). A manga adaptation by Katase has also been serialized since April 2015. The series was adapted into an anime on January 11, 2020, with a second season arriving in 2023.

At the age of 11, Kotoko was kidnapped by youkai who made her an intermediary between the spirits and humans but at the price of her eye and leg.

Now, whenever youkai wish for their problems to be solved, they make their way to Kotoko for consultation. She is joined by Kuro, whom she falls for and may have a mysterious power hidden inside him.
