Kotoko solves the mystery of the voodoo doll in episode 1 of In/Spectre season 2, titled “That God’s Name Is,”

As some friendly ghosts and spirits talk about the current state of the spiritual and human world over a game of cards, they also mention their Goddess of Wisdom, Kotoko. One who sacrificed an eye and a leg and is now revered among the Ayakashi, she also has a boyfriend, Kuro.

They investigate mysterious sounds from the upper floor of one of the ghost’s apartments, revealed to be an ancient voodoo doll filled with cursed energy. They take it out in the woods and battle, showing their entire arsenal of abilities.

Episode 2 Speculation

With the exorcism of the voodoo doll, this fight has already reached its conclusion and shown us the powers of Kurou and Kotoko. The next episode will likely begin the setup for the new arc and whoever the main villain will be.

We may also be introduced to some new characters as the season has just begun and the arc is just starting. The first episode was mostly a recap and showcasing Kurou’s abilities and powers.

Recap of Episode 1

The episode begins at night, showing all the spiritual monsters roaming around the human world. It introduces us to Kotoko, who offered her right eye and left leg to become the Goddess of Wisdom of the Ayakashi.

Resolving problems between both Ayakashi and humans alike, they discuss her personality as well as her ruthlessness, but still keeping the yokai hidden from the human world, and the boyfriend she has found in recent days, Kurou.

Kurou is immortal since he consumed monster flesh but remains subservient to Kotoko. The spirits continue playing their card game. Kurou and Kotoko talk about moving from their current apartment since the neighbors are spreading rumors about them.

She talks about a ghost that watches movies with their human, who begins hearing a mysterious ‘thunk-thunk’ noise from the condo above them. The owner would ignore the noise, but the ghost was starting to get chills and freaked out about it and thus came to Kotoko for help.

They complained to the manager, who told them that the condo above had been empty for two months making the case even more intriguing. Moreover, they came across a very creepy doll that seemingly appeared out of nowhere and emanated a suspicious aura.

He suspects the ghost wants to spread a curse around the whole building, and Kotoko agrees to resolve this matter and takes it to Kurou since he needs a new apartment anyway. They go together to investigate and find that the supernatural is not involved.

It was just a pet hiding in the walls of the poorly constructed building and making noises while shuffling around. The manager was merely lying about the doll since it would paint a bad picture of the building’s maintenance and that pets are not allowed if the truth was found.

The manager even went so far as to fabricate the noise to evade suspicion and hide the pet. The pet is a giant lizard, seemingly a Komodo dragon, which explains why he went to such extensive measures to cover up the lie.

In exchange for her not spilling the beans about the manager’s lie, he negotiated a minimal rental fee for Kurou to move in. Later in the car ride, we find that, in reality, Kotoko was the one lying the entire time.

Kotoko explains that she didn’t want to scare them even more than they already were, and she explains that the doll in question was a voodoo doll carrying hundreds of years of cursed energy.

When the occupant left, the doll was inadvertently activated at night and began conducting its activities. Kotoko must destroy beauty properly by destroying its cursed energy and not just its physical form.

They reach the forest where the doll is now kept, and it shows its proper spirit form, which looks like a sumo wrestler, “rikishi,” meaning “one who is powerful .”The doll begins stomping to ward off evil spirits, as is tradition, and they begin to fight the ghost.

Kurou goes to fight it and dodges its sumo strikes, and since he has eaten a kudan, he can see the future and choose a lot he wants. Along with his immortality, this makes him a very fearsome opponent.

He gets killed twice, comes back repeatedly, and manages to reach a future where the spirit is in a perfect spot for Kotoko to attack from behind and take off its head, causing it to disappear.

The two walk back home together as the forest lights up with the glow of all the friendly yokai, ghosts, and supernatural who come to pay respect to Kotoko.

About In/Spectre: Kyokou Suiri

In/Spectre (Kyoko Suiri) is a novel series written by Kyo Shirodaira and illustrated by Hiro Kyohara (Vol. 1) and Chasiba Katase (Vol. 2 onwards). A manga adaptation by Katase has also been serialized since April 2015. The series was adapted into an anime on January 11, 2020, with a second season arriving in 2023.

At the age of 11, Kotoko was kidnapped by youkai who made her an intermediary between the spirits and humans but at the price of her eye and leg.

Now, whenever youkai wish for their problems to be solved, they make their way to Kotoko for consultation. She is joined by Kuro, whom she falls for and may have a mysterious power hidden inside him.
