Actor Idris Elba will be teaming up with Extraction director Sam Hargrave for Stay Frosty, set during the Christmas season. It will be a brand-new John Wick-style action movie.
First reported by Deadline, Warner Bros. reportedly dished out $1 million to claim Tyler Marceca’s action script Stay Frosty. The writer is known for his first Black List script, The Disciple Program, which was acquired by Universal. For Stay Frosty, he adjusted the theme according to the ’80s high-action Christmas movies, like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon.
Elba will play the protagonist who miraculously survives an assassin’s bullet to the head. Now, he has to figure out the identity of the man who wants him dead, along with the reason for it.
All that, and he still has to make his way back home in time to spend Christmas with his son. The John Wick reference suggests we would get to see some really engaging action sequences in the film.
The producers include Dark Horse Entertainment’s Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg. Warner Bros. executive Peter Dodd was responsible for bringing in this project.
Elba’s latest movie, Netflix’s Concrete Cowboy, was a father-son drama set in Philadelphia and featuring the famous urban horsebackers. Idris Elba will soon be spotted as Bloodsport in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. He also recently wrapped up George Miller’s next movie Three Thousand Years of Longing, with co-actor Tilda Swinton. He is currently shooting for the Netflix Western The Harder They Fall.
Initial roles for Hargrave included Chris Evans’ stunt double in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Later, the fight and stunt coordinator position in Captain America: Civil War was really an upgrade.
Hargrave smoothly worked his way up, flourishing as a second-unit director in Avengers: Infinity War. He burgeoned with his directing debut on the Chris Hemsworth starrer Extraction, which went on to become Netflix’s most-viewed movie last summer.
This fresh contract will need to squeeze into Elba’s bustling schedule. And Hargrave also has Extraction 2 on his directorial To-Do list this fall. So, let’s see when and how it all pans out!
