It’s the time for dreams, passions, and dramatic high-school crushes, as Hulu releases the trailer for its upcoming gay romcom/coming-of-age film, Crush.
The trailer begins with the main character, Paige, brainstorming about an art piece that she needs to make in order to get into her dream college, Cal Arts.
We then meet her mother and her “platonic soulmate” best friend Dylan before seeing her go crazy over her crush, Gabriella.
As it always happens with awkward and shy protagonists, Paige makes a fool out of herself and ends up joining the track team to impress Gabriella. She is then paired with AJ, and they start to form a bond, with Paige’s heart being split in two.
There’s Gabriella, and then there’s AJ. There’s the track team, and then there’s following her passion for art and making the perfect art piece.
It’s going to be tough to navigate through high-school drama and teenage love, but at least Paige has got her best friend and her very cool mom to get through it. (Well, maybe a bit too “cool” as she mistakes an eraser for a sex toy.)
The trailer ends with Paige having a moment of epiphany, “I’m learning that when it comes to art, you can’t force it. It’s a lot like love.”
The cast includes Rowan Blanchard, Auli’i Cravalho, Isabella Ferreira, Tyler Alvarez, Teala Dunn, Rico Paris, Addie Weyrich, Aasif Mandvi, Michelle Buteau, and Megan Mullally.
From director Sammi Cohen and script by Kirsten King and Casey Rackham, Crush seems like the latest promising addition to the recently increasing list of LGBTQ+ romcoms.
Crush is set to premiere exclusively on Hulu on April 29.
