Hulu has dropped the official trailer for its highly-anticipated series, Pam & Tommy, and it goes beyond the crazy, sensationalized relationship of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee as they deal with the aftermath of their leaked sex tape.
The trailer begins with Lily James as Anderson, presumably testifying, as she recounts her relationship with Sebastian Stan’s Lee.
Props to the makeup department as both the lead actors look unrecognizable, and at a quick glance, one could even mistake James for the real Pamela as she runs on the beach in one of the shots that show her filming for Baywatch.
We see Rand Gauthier (Seth Rogen) and his partner, Uncle Miltie (Nick Offerman), lose their minds after finding something so private, “it’s like we’re seeing something we’re not supposed to be seeing.”
With Meat Loaf’s “I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)” playing in the back, the trailer recounts Gauthier and Miltie plotting to profit off the sex tape in their possession as they plan to distribute it online—in a time where the World Wide Web was seldom browsed for porn.
Anderson is mortified to find out the crew is watching a tape which she made with Lee on their honeymoon in 1995.
Lee doesn’t seem much phased by it as Anderson panics, “You don’t seem to understand what a big deal this is.” The drummer replies, “I’m on that tape just the same as you,” but she explains that it’s a much bigger deal for her, adding, “But this is worse for me.”
The clip also features Lee shooting a shotgun at one point, which is an incident that Gauthier described to be the moment he decided to steal the safe that contained the tape.
Pam & Tommy Official Trailer:
The Mötley Crüe drummer was previously portrayed by Machine Gun Kelly in 2019’s The Dirt, which didn’t even address Anderson’s existence. Although the Netflix movie seemed like a raw series of events, the Hulu series promises a deeper insight on a more personal level.
Anderson and Lee got married in February 1995, just about a week after their first meeting. They had two sons together, but Anderson filed for divorce in 1998 following Lee’s attack on her, for which he spent four months in jail.
It’ll be interesting to see if the series addresses their relationship beyond the “greatest love story ever sold,” as Hulu calls it.
But what do the real Pam and Tommy think of the series? Lee previously said that he was mostly okay with it. However, Anderson seemed less than pleased about it. A source close to the actress told The Sun, “Pamela has no intention of watching this God awful show, absolutely not. Never.”
Co-writer DV DeVincentis spoke to PEOPLE during the trailer release, explaining the intentions behind the series and had all praises for Anderson,
This story is so meaningful and powerful to revisit 25 years later because of how Pamela Anderson was misrepresented, misunderstood, and underestimated. And it sort of rhymes with what so many women still go through, if not publicly then privately… My central hope is that the world revises how it looks at Pamela Anderson and what the world put her through.
Craig Gillespie’s Pam & Tommy will consist of 8 episodes and premiere with the first three episodes on February 2 on Hulu.
