Hulu canceled ‘Death and Other Details’ after just one season and less than a month after the season finale was released.
Starring Mandy Patinkin and Violett Beane, the ten-episode mystery series involved their characters solving a montage of murders while traveling aboard an ocean cruise.
The show amassed a modest 55% critical score and 66% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Although the show has been canceled right after the season 1 finale, the first season will be available to stream on Hulu.
‘Death and Other Details’ now joins a list of recently canceled Hulu shows, including ‘How I Met Your Father,’ ‘The Fool,’ and ‘The Great.’ Interestingly, while those other shows had at least two seasons, ‘Death and Other Details’ only had one.
‘Death and Other Details’ had so much potential with its great cast and a watertight mystery.
However, the pacing could have been better, and ten episodes felt too long for a mystery that lost its initial spark. By mid-season, it was pretty obvious who the enigmatic Viktor Sams really was, and the ‘mystery’ was non-existent.
In the meantime, the narrative wandered aimlessly and gave us the impression of new plot points getting introduced. However, the characters were never engaging and failed to connect with the audience.
Most of them were thoroughly unlikeable and lacked character development to warrant an emotional connection with the audience.
The one exception was the somewhat well-developed relationship between Rufus Cotesworth and Imogene Scott.
In ‘Death and Other Details’ season 1, Sam’s true identity was revealed, leading to their arrest for their crimes.
The season finale left us with a compelling setup for season 2 as Imogene and her allies stumbled upon a pair of severed legs falling from a ski lift.
Meanwhile, a lifelong friend of Imogene received mysterious orders from Sam’s henchmen.
Despite these intriguing developments, the show failed to gain the expected momentum, which has resulted in its cancellation.
