Every Easter Egg and MCU Reference in Thor: Love and Thunder

Thor: Love and Thunder is finally out and running in theaters, and like every other MCU movie, it is full of Easter eggs and MCU references. To make things more interesting, director Taika Waititi has also dropped some pop culture references in the there, too.

In case you’ve missed any, here’s a comprehensive guide of every Easter egg and other references that we could spot in Love and Thunder.

1. Thor’s Yggdrasil T-Shirt

In Thor’s opening scene in the film, he’s seen with the Guardians of the Galaxy. In the scene, he is wearing a half-sleeved white t-shirt, with a picture of Yggdrasil on it.

Yggdrasil is the World Tree in Norse Mythology, holding up the Nine Realms, including Asgard, Niflheim and Jotunheim. It is not an Easter egg per se, but a fun reference to Thor’s Norse roots and mythology.

2. Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder

After Thor, along with the Guardians of the Galaxy, manages to save the planet, he gets a gift for his good deeds. If you’re a fan of the comics, you’ll know who they are.

Thor gets two screaming goats as his gift, who are named Toothgrinder and Toothgnasher in the comics. These mystical goats are known to pull Thor’s mighty chariot. Though in the film, they end up pulling a tourist Viking ship.

3. Pop Culture References: Event Horizon and Interstellar

In the film, Dr. Jane Foster is suffering from cancer. In one scene, where she is taking her chemotherapy treatment, she sees a young man next to her reading her book. Foster actually takes the time to explain to the man how wormholes actually work, exactly the way it was shown in these two films.

She even mentions them while trying to explain it the same way. In Event Horizon, Dr. Weir also explains how wormholes work by folding a poster into half and putting a pen through it. In Interstellar, there’s a similar demonstration by Dr. Romily.

Dr. Foster does exactly the same thing in Love and Thunder, which was an ode to both of the cult classic films.

4. The Handshake Between Thor and Star-Lord

When Thor and Star-Lord were parting their ways, they had one final handshake, which was a silent nod to Loki, Thor’s brother and the God of Mischief. The handshake begins with a human handshake, to the Asgardian handshake, the snake handshake you cannot trust and finally, the Asgardian high handshake.

The reference to the snake could easily be read as a reference to Loki. In fact, in Ragnarok, Thor narrates a story from his childhood, when Loki turned into a snake. Thor went to pick the snake up, and Loki quickly turned back and stabbed him.

Perhaps, that is why Thor called it “the snake handshake you cannot trust”.

5. Falligar the Behemoth

Falligar the Behemoth is a huge hyena-like creature who has been felled by Gorr. He is also the Patron god of the Galactic Frontier and the champion of the Tournament of Immortals.

In the film, when Lady Sif calls Thor for help in tackling Gorr, he reaches to find her next to a dead Falligar. This shot of his dead body is taken directly from the Thor comics, published in 2012.

6. Infinity Conez Ice-Cream Shop in Asgard

Here’s my favorite one of the lot. In the movie, New Asgard has become a tourist spot for Avengers fans. So, the town has loads of Marvel references.

Among them, the show-stealer was definitely an ice-cream shop named Infinity Conez. The sign is super cool: it’s an Infinity Gauntlet holding an ice-cream cone, with six candles to represent the six Infinity Stones.

Taika Waititi had earlier given a hint of such a shop in the film in his interview with Entertainment Tonight.

7. Thor’s Loki Tattoo

You’re lying if you didn’t miss Tom Hiddleston as Loki in a movie featuring Thor. But MCU knows how to please its fans, so Loki fans did not return empty-handed. Hear me out, this one isn’t a vague reference like the snake-handshake one I mentioned above.

In a scene in the Omnipotence City, Thor was in disguise when he went to meet Zeus, the King of the Gods. Zeus flicks off his disguise, and unfortunately, he was wearing nothing underneath!

But this helped us spot the tribute to Loki on Thor’s backside. There’s a tattoo in Thor’s back which has Loki’s helmet and a broken heart, with the words R.I.P. Loki written on it. As we know, Loki died in the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War (only in this universe).

Of course, he is alive and kicking it in another universe and pretty busy with the Time Variance Authority as of now. Nevertheless, this small tribute to the OG Loki from the OG universe was pretty sweet.

8. “Nick Furry” on Thor’s Phone

Not a big one, but if you noticed properly, Thor has Nick Fury’s phone number saved as Nick Furry in his phone.

In a flashback to Thor and Jane Foster’s relationship, we learn that they broke up as they both got busy with work. In this montage, Jane is constantly called away and Thor has to run around saving the world. In one bit, he receives a call from Nick Fury, and that’s where we noticed this.

9. The Statues at the Gates of Eternity

The final battle between Thor and Gorr takes place at the Gates of Eternity, where you can spot the statues of several MCU characters.

There’s a statue of Uatu the Watcher, who appeared in Disney Plus’s What If? series. Uatu is an observer of the multiverse and voiced by Jeffrey Wright. There’s also The Living Tribunal, along with Infinity and Death. While the former is a personification of multiversal law, the latter two are among the four cosmic entities who forged the Infinity stones.

10. About Thor: Love and Thunder

Thor: Love and Thunder is a MCU movie and the fourth installation in the Thor series. It is directed by Ragnarok’s director, Taika Waititi, and will show Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman reprising their roles as Thor Odinson and Dr. Jane Foster.

The movie will be based on The Mighty Thor comics in which Thor Odinson loses the ability to lift Mjolnir, and Jane Foster takes on the role of Mighty Thor. After the events of Avengers: Endgame, Thor teams up with The Guardians of the Galaxy for a short time, leaving Valkyrie as the ruler of New Asgard. But Thor returns to team up with Korg, Valkyrie and Jane’s Mighty Thor to take down Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale) – before he takes out all the gods in existence.

Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson return for Watiti’s second go, while Russell Crowe and Natalie Portaman join Taika’s project for the first time. The movie is out on July 8, 2022.
