Some shows don’t need romance or over the top action to grab your attention. The way their stories are presented automatically pulls you into another world, often reminiscent of our own.
It is perhaps this similarity that makes such shows so memorable despite their mundane setting.
Barakamon is one such anime. The story does not have an overachieving plot, and there isn’t a drastic change within the characters. However, there are small things that make the show worthwhile.
This 12-episode, slice-of-life anime, will surely make you crave for more of its story by the time you complete watching it. Don’t miss out on Barakamon, one of the best anime of the genre!

3. Can you Watch Handa-kun before watching Barakamon?
Handa-kun is the prequel to Barakamon and narrates the stories of Seishuu Handa’s (protagonist of Barakamon) childhood. Although both the shows have the same protagonist, their stories are unrelated and very different from each other.
You can watch Handa-kun before watching Barakamon without spoiling the latter.
Handa-kun focuses more on comedy rather than sticking to slice-of-life. Fans often complain that the prequel wasn’t as good as Barakamon.
However, if you watch Handa-kun for what it is, it is a fairly good show. It is also quite entertaining to watch the early days of the pompous calligrapher.
4. About Barakamon
Young, talented, and handsome master calligrapher, Seishuu Handa, unfortunately, is a pompous brat.
In an exhibition displaying his finest work, he gets insulted by a veteran in the field. He reacts hysterically and, as a punishment, gets exiled to Goto Islands, far away from his city life in Tokyo.
The neighbors surrounding his new adobe are utterly incapable of keeping their noses out of other people’s business. Since Handa was a new resident, he instantly grabbed their attention.
Nowhere near to a peaceful life, Handa continues to try to develop a unique calligraphy style and learns invaluable life lessons on his journey.
Thanks to his nosy neighbors, he finally understands the value of his own life as well as the life of others.
