For the final arc of Silent Hill 2’s story, James arrives at the Lakeview Hotel that Mary had hinted at in her letter. At the Check-in, he finds out that there’s an old videotape stored in the safe of the Employee section.
Searching for answers, he needs to recover this tape from the past, but the safe code is hidden away in a gem box puzzle. Here’s how to solve it.
1. Gem Box Puzzle Solution in Silent Hill 2 Remake
In the Silent Hill 2 remake, the Gemstone Puzzle requires players to align the Gem Box symbol with a painting in the Manager’s Office in the Lakeview Hotel.
To solve it, collect three Gemstones – Red from the Manager’s Room, Blue from the Freezer Room, and Green from the Cafeteria Kitchen – and arrange them in the Gem Box in a specific pattern: Red in the upper right, Green in the upper left, and Blue in the lower left.
Successfully solving the puzzle reveals the code 7414, unlocking the Break Room safe and granting access to James’ Videotape and the Basement Key, which progresses the story. Here’s a step-by-step guide to completing the Gemstone puzzle in Lakeview Hotel.
1. Entering the Employee Elevator
Now that you’ve learned James’ videotape is stored in the Employee section, courtesy of the letter from Check-in, it’s time to retrieve it.
Navigate to the locked Employee Elevator on the second floor. Entering the elevator triggers an alarm due to weight limits, requiring you to deposit all items (weapons, healing, flashlight, and map) into a nearby locker. However, James can keep personal items like Mary’s letter and photo.
After exiting the elevator, proceed to the nearby room to collect the Employee Section map. However, be cautious as you navigate the halls, as two Mandarins are roaming, and a Lying Figure is circling the central counter in the kitchen.
Since you lack healing items, prioritize stealth or swiftly running past enemies. Reach the central room, where thankfully the monsters can’t get to you, and gather two crucial items: a Health Drink and the Employee Section map.
3. Finding the Gemstone Puzzle
Make your way to the Manager’s Office, indicated on your map, to find the Gem Box puzzle, Health Drink, and Shotgun Shells. Solving the puzzle reveals the code to the Break Room safe holding James’ videotape.
Examine the Gem Box and note the painting on the wall ahead. You aim to align the Gem Box’s central pattern with the painting’s design. However, you’ll need to locate three colored gems to complete the puzzle.
4. Locating the Three Gemstones
- To progress, head to the Manager’s Room through the TV room cupboard you can push. Collect the Red Gemstone, then proceed to the Pantry to interact with the “Glimpse of the Past” item.
- Next, visit the Freezer Room to retrieve the Blue Gemstone from the fridge and enter the Cafeteria by jumping through the window to pick up a health drink, carefully avoiding the patrolling enemy.
- Collect the Green Gemstone in the Kitchen, dodging enemies. Optionally, interact with the Kitchen’s bread shelf for a hidden achievement.
5. Solving the Gemstone Puzzle
With all three Gemstones now in hand, return to the Manager’s Office and insert them into the Gem Box. Align the symbol on the box with the painting’s design to solve the puzzle. To unlock the safe, configure the Gemstones in the Gem Box as follows:
- Red Gemstone in the top right slot.
- Green Gemstone in the top left slot.
- Blue Gemstone in the bottom left slot.
This will reveal a hidden layer with the code “7414” burned into it. With the code in hand, proceed to the Break Room, enter it into the safe, and retrieve the Video Tape and Basement Key. Use the Basement Key to unlock the Basement Door to progress the story.
With the safe cracked and the videotape in hand, the mystery of Mary’s reappearance deepens. Continue towards the concluding sequence of the game if you dare to face the truth, James.
