How to Get Metal Shards – Easy Farming Guide – Horizon Forbidden West

Metal Shards are an essential material in Horizon Forbidden West. Whether you want to buy new equipment or craft ammo for your weapons, shards will be a key resource throughout the campaign.

Moreover, Metal Shards act as a main form of currency in the game to assist Aloy’s style of ranged and melee battle skills. Although the game mechanics demand the fast burning of shards, they’re pretty easy to earn.

You can easily farm Metal Shards by efficiently navigating the map and completing main quests, side quests, killing machines, and opening treasures. Trading your loot is another way of earning shards in Horizon Forbidden West.

Let’s study elaborate ways to obtain Metal Shards with utmost ease and learn where to earn them.

1. While Progressing Through the Main Quest

Players can get their hands on Metal Shards through the main quest in a couple of ways.

I. Killing and Looting Enemies

Completing main campaign quests allows you to gather a decent quantity of Metal Shards by killing and looting machines and human opponents.

Furthermore, it’s important to note that mid-sized and large-sized machines yield significantly more shards than smaller machines and humans.

II. Opening Treasure Boxes

Players also come across treasure boxes containing Metal Shards while exploring new regions in the game. As a result, you should search every nook and corner in Horizon Forbidden West to collect as many treasure boxes as you can.

2. Completing Side Quests

There are several reasons why completing side quests is an intelligent way to farm Metal Shards.

Firstly, you receive shards as a form of reward for successfully finishing quests. Additionally, it allows you to come across more non-playable characters (NPCs) and enemies. You can kill and loot them and exchange the loot for shards from traders.

3. Clearing Hunting Lodge Trials

Players can also resort to finishing the Hunting Lodge trials to receive Metal Shards as a form of payment. The trials are a series of challenges that put your hunting skills to the test.

Besides, completing the trails will also reward you with other useful resources. You can trade or sell them to earn money.

4. What are the Hunting Lodge trials?

Horizon Forbidden West possesses twelve Hunting Lodge trials. There are a total of four Hunting Lodges with three trials each.

You can achieve three grades in every trial, namely Quarter Stripes (Bronze), Half Stripes (Silver), and Full Stripes (Gold). Achieving the lowest grade is enough to receive Metal Shards as a reward. Players also receive Hunting Lodge medals which they can trade-in at the Arena for potent weapons.

All Hunting Lodges and their respective trials are the following:

5. Uses of Metal Shards in Horizon Forbidden West

There are two primary uses of Metal Shards in Horizon Forbidden West. Firstly, they come in handy for crafting. Shards are necessary for making each piece of ammunition and the tiniest upgrades in the game. Even the arrows for your bows need shards for manufacturing.

Another purpose of shards is to act as a form of currency in the game. Players can use this currency to buy items from merchants. These items include materials, armor, weapons, and upgrades.
