There’s always a particular feature in a game that attracts gamers and amplifies its hype. For example, in Horizon Zero Dawn, players could turn hostile dinosaurs into powerful allies.
In Horizon Forbidden West, this feature helps override machines and makes Aloy befriend them. She’s capable of mounting them and traversing through the jungle of the Forbidden West. Consequentially, the game has a flying mount for Aloy to ride on.
After unlocking a machine’s override, you can override it by approaching it stealthily and holding down Triangle. The machine will then either fight for you for a short period or become available as a ridable mount depending on its overriding abilities.
However, not every machine in Horizon Forbidden West is overridable since the start. First, you need to unlock their ability to override, and here’s how you can do it.
Unlocking Machine Overrides and Mounts
In Horizon Forbidden West, if you come across a partially unlocked or inaccessible machine, you need to create an override via the Fabrication Terminal found in the Base. After successfully gathering the resources and crafting the override, you’ll be able to override the machine.
In order to override machines, you first need to find any of the six Cauldrons located on the map. Every Cauldron is responsible for crafting a set of machines, specifically found around the area.
After locating the Cauldron and fighting your way through the facility, you’ll be able to learn overrides for several unique machines and potential mounts.
Nevertheless, not every machine you gain access to will initially be available to override. You’ll find in the machine catalog of the Notebook that a machine can be fully unlocked and ready to override or partially unlocked.
Machine Mounts in Horizon Forbidden West
There are four mounts available in Horizon Forbidden West, and Aloy inherits the first one at the beginning of the game. You’ll need to complete Cauldrons present in the game to unlock the rest.
The four mounts in the game are as follows:
I. Charger
The Charger is your first mount in Horizon Forbidden West, and you’ll find this ram-lookalike machine in herds initially in the game. Aloy begins the campaign with the override code for this machine. Hence, you can grab this mount and navigate through the jungle with ease.
Apart from the conventional method, players can press Square to ride the charger.
Chargers are quick yet weak. As a result, they don’t absorb much damage when you get into a fight while riding one.
II. Bristleback
When you reach the Daunt, the first area in Horizon Forbidden West, you’ll find the natives struggling to manage an enormous batch of machines known as Bristlebacks. Moreover, players can unlock the ability to ride huge warthog machines as they work through the story.
Bristlebacks are great fighters and possess a variety of elemental attacks. They’re relatively quick, which enables them to become a preferable choice for navigation and as backups for when you run into battles.
Players can get their hands on the override for Bristlebacks in the TAU Cauldron, also known as Repair Bay, west of Plainsong.
III. Clawstrider
Once you progress further in Horizon Forbidden West, you’ll come across the Velociraptor-like robots known as Clawstriders.
They’re better fighters than the rest of the machines you encounter, but the setback is that they’re slower as mounts. Besides, the Clawstriders aren’t as big as the Bristlebacks, so they’re quite maneuverable, which prevents them from getting stuck on trees or other obstacles.
You can obtain the Clawstrider override by finishing the IOTA Claudran found in the northern corner of the map, north of Scalding Spear.
IV. Sunwing
The Sunwing is by far the best mount of the game. You can spot these Pteranodon robots roosting in certain places of the Forbidden West jungle.
They possess the ability to fly, which makes exploring the map on them an easy task. Instead of climbing up from the ground, you can reach a few missions and puzzles by dropping on the location from above.
Also, they’re the fastest mounts but not good fighters as they can get easily destroyed when flown into hostile territory.
Obtainable through only the main storyline and the Gemini Cauldron, these flying bad boys are a must-have.
In addition to these, you can find override for other machines too in Horizon Forbidden West. But, they’ll only serve the purpose of aiding you in battles and won’t let you mount them.
