Horizon Forbidden West is an absolute triumph of a video game, taking everything that made the first game such an endearing title and dialing it all to a hundred. But with as vast a world as the Forbidden West, there’s sure to be countless new systems and complexities that can confuse you.
One such system is Aloy’s ability to swim underwater. In order to do so, you need to get yourself a Diving Mask. This mask would allow you to swim underwater with ease and open an endless area of exploration, making it quite the essential item within the game.
But getting this mask is another story entirely – if you wish to explore the realms beneath the water, then I’m afraid you’re going to have to wait a little bit. That said, let me explain how you can get a Diving Mask in Horizon Forbidden West.
In Horizon Forbidden West, you can obtain the Diving Mask during “The Sea of Sands” Main Quest. In it, Morlund will task you with collecting Compressed Air Capsules – do that, and you’ll be allowed to craft the Diving Mask. The mask would then help you to explore underwater areas in the game.
Now that we know the basics of getting the Diving Mask, why not discuss the quest a little more in detail? I say – let’s talk about “The Sea of Sands” a little, as it would also help you precisely understand how to obtain the mask.
So, without further ado, let’s dive straight into it.
The Sea of Sands Walkthrough – Horizon Forbidden West
Since this is a story mission, you’ll naturally make your way to it by playing through the game. The quest is basically related to the Poseidon protocol – long story short, you need to head over to the Tower of Tears in Las Vegas ruins, complete a fetch-quest, and fix the problems within.
Once inside the Tower, you need to exhaust all dialogues with Morlund, after which you’re going to have to fetch some compressed air capsules.
It’s a pretty simple fetch task – head to the lift shaft and dive down into the water to grab it.
You’ll also need to collect some machine parts in this part, so kill the Burrowers and Glinthawks present in the area. Once you do that, though, a Longlegs with Shock damage and a Frost Bellowback with Fire damage – take them on, loot their bodies, and return to Morlund.
Once you return to Morlund, Aloy would then be able to craft a Diving Mask for herself, which would allow her to stay underwater for higher periods of time.
Now, once you’ve obtained the necessary gear, you’ll need to head underwater into the casino. Here, you have to find a red security console – it’s pretty hard to miss, so you’ll be able to spot it with ease.
This console would direct you towards two valves that you can access through the circular tunnels. Once you head inside both the circular tunnels and have turned the valves within each of them, you need to head over to the Maintenance Pump Station from the main tunnel and drain the water.
Now, head back to where you might have first encountered the Tideripper (When you first entered underwater towards the casino). Use Shock Damage to bring the thing down – you can now move past it and grab the Poseidon.
Only a couple of things in this quest remain now – use your Pullcaster to head right out of the Tower of Tears, speak to Morlund, and return to GAIA. With that, your quest would be complete – great work.
