The God of War series has gradually transformed from a gore-filled hack-and-slash to a meaningful TPP. Also, the game has improved along the lines of RPG stats and skills of weapons and armors. And since resource materials are essential in supplying players with ability perks and enchantment sockets, their vitality in the game has grown exponentially.
One such material is the smoldering ember, a crucial resource for building and upgrading powerful pieces of armors like the Smoldering Brimstone Pauldron.
To find smoldering ember in God of War 4, players need to travel to the Realm of Fire, Muspelheim, and participate in a series of arena trials.
To enter Muspelheim, players need to fulfill two requirements. First, they need to interact with the Witch twice, while the second requirement demands players to solve the puzzle in the Witch’s cave.
Although the description of this scarce resource mentions where to look for them, finding it can be a difficult task. Here’s a guide to obtaining the smoldering ember in God of War 4.
Once players navigate their way into Muspelheim and complete six arena trials and one hidden trial, they’ll unlock various quantities of smoldering ember. However, only the hidden trial is repeatable, while the rest are unplayable upon completion.
Here’s a list of the trials you’ll have to complete to receive smoldering ember as a reward:
Arena #1 – Kill 15 Enemies in 3 Minutes
The first arena trial requires players to defeat 15 opponents in less than 3 minutes.
Moreover, the quicker you finish this challenge, the more smoldering ember you’ll receive.
Arena #2 – Last For 5 Minutes
The challenge of the second trial is unique.
It requires players to survive in the arena for at least five minutes. And, if they’re able to do it while opponents regenerate HP, the quantity of smoldering ember in the reward will increase.
Arena #3 – Kill Grunt Enemies To Break the Shield and Kill Enemies in the Gold Rings
The third arena is significantly challenging. As a consequence, the rewards are better.
As the first task, players need to destroy the shield by killing the Grunts while surviving their blows. Then, they have to defeat opponents in the gold rings, which is possible through perfectly timed attacks.
Arena #4 – Kill 100 Enemies and Don’t Permit Grunts To Grab Atreus More Than Twice
In the fourth arena, players need to defeat 100 opponents while fighting to survive. It’s a tough assignment, given that the enemies possess strong counter-attacks.
The second challenge is quite frustrating as while defeating enemies, Kratos also has to save Atreus. Opponents grab Atreus due to his inability to attack and present Kratos with a chance to save him.
Hence, if you’re able to kill enemies and not let them get a hold of Atreus more than twice, you’ll receive more smoldering embers.
Arena #5 – Increase Time by Killing Enemies and Dodge Attacks of at Least 20 Enemies
For success in the fifth trial, players need to kill opponents to gain time. Then, they need to use the added time to dodge attacks from twenty different enemies. It requires a detailed understanding of the God of War 4 control system and swift hand-eye coordination.
Upon completion, players will inherit a significant amount of smoldering ember. Don’t get disheartened if it takes a few tries.
Arena #6 – Valkyrie Boss Fight
The sixth and final arena in Muspelheim features a fight with Gondul, a Valkyrie boss. Besides, this trial doesn’t constitute an additional challenge.
Players can conclude this fight by memorizing and dodging the Valkyrie’s fire attacks, while the dash attacks will require them to roll away from it.
Each of the first five arena trials consists of normal, hard, and impossible difficulty levels. The amount of smoldering ember in the reward increases with each level.
Furthermore, you need to finish the trials in normal and hard modes to unlock the impossible rating. Also, perfecting the impossible rating of each arena will grant you a key.
Surtr’s Hidden Trial
By winning the boss fight and collecting three keys from any three of the first five arenas, players can unlock the Surtr’s hidden trial.
Your responsibility is to kill as many enemies as possible in a limited amount of time.
If you achieve the bronze rating, you’ll get 20 smoldering embers, 35 smoldering embers for the silver rating, and 50 pieces of the precious material if you land a gold rating.
Also, since the hidden trial is replayable, players can farm truckloads of smoldering ember from here.
