Glitches or bugs in a game can arise from errors in the program design or the source code. As a result, a part of the game might not serve the purpose intended by the creator.
Glitches are impartially common. Hence, there are official internet forums that the gaming community can use to report unusual occurrences in the game. In November 2020, there were thousands of reports of a game-breaking main quest glitch in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla on the Ubisoft forum.
Subsequently, in March 2021, the developers released Patch 1.2.0, followed by Patch 1.2.1 in April. They only provided minor graphics and small quest modifications but couldn’t fix the major glitch.
On the 6th of September 2021, Ubisoft launched Title Update 1.3.1 to put the issue to bed. Title Update 1.3.1 resolves the “A Brewing Storm” main quest glitch, which denied players from interacting with NPCs in the Ravensthorpe village of AC Valhalla.
What is Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s Title Update 1.3.1?
Title Update 1.3.3 allows players to converse with Randvi, the main quest giver, who enables them to access new areas and content on the map.
Additionally, the patch update ensures the smooth progression of the above-mentioned main quest.
Hence, after finishing the main quests of the Cent area, you’ll be able to meet Randvi, who’ll initiate the “A Brewing Storm” quest.
The quest will demand players to rest, following which a cutscene will play. It’ll depict your alienated fellow countryman, Dag, challenging you, Eivor, to a duel to establish control over the village in the absence of Sigurd.
How did the “A Brewing Storm” glitch affect players?
Players of AC Valhalla who encountered the “A Brewing Storm” glitch reported getting stuck in a game state without being able to progress further. Certain players couldn’t activate various side quests, nor could they defeat Dag.
In an elaborate sense, the glitch affected players in the following ways:
I. Stuck in a Loop
Players got stuck in a loop of a permanent game state which prevented them from moving ahead in the main storyline. All they could do was roam the ghost-town version of Ravensthorpe endlessly.
II. Dag Became Immortal
As a consequence of the glitch, the quest description for “A Brewing Storm” never appeared. Also, Dag doesn’t spawn in the correct location, and since the glitch prevented players from interacting with NPCs, they couldn’t fight him.
Ironically, players could locate Dag in the northwest corner of Ravensthorpe. But, when murdered, he kept coming back to life.
III. Denied Access to Side Quests
Since the glitch intercepted any interaction with NPCs, players couldn’t access side quests such as Reda’s timed quests, river raids, and Valka’s quests. This phenomenon rendered the whole gaming experience pointless.
IV. Possible Workarounds
The “A Brewing Storm” main quest glitch in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla had no sensible workarounds. Players tried to restart the game, verify their files and return to a checkpoint before encountering the bug, but none of the methods seemed to solve the issue. However, the only possible workaround was to restart the whole game campaign.
Not to forget, as the glitch occurred around the midway of the storyline, it meant players would lose 50+ hours of gaming experience.
Unfortunately, Ubisoft introduced Title Update 1.3.1 ten months after the first occurrence of the glitch, so a handful of players resorted to losing all their progress.
Ubisoft’s Official Statements on the Glitch of “A Brewing Storm” in AC Valhalla
An email from a Ubisoft representative to the Washington Post read:
We are aware of this specific issue and our teams are working on finding a fix. While we could not reproduce the issue on our end, we have been able to analyze some of the save data from affected players and are developing a fix that will be included in a forthcoming update.
Ubisoft Email
The size of Title Update 1.3.1 lies in the range of 14 to 35 gigabytes, depending on the console.
Nevertheless, a few players who install it still report the same issue and notice no advancement in the game.
In hopes of fixing the “A Brewing Storm” glitch of AC Valhalla, Ubisoft released three updates over the span of a year, while none seem to mend the situation entirely. This debacle has led to a decline in the game’s popularity.
