Fresh water is one of the few resources in New World that players can discover effortlessly. Unlike reality, it is an inexhaustible item that can be obtained from the umpteen water bodies flowing through the island of Aeternum.
If something is being handed out this easily, it must be worthless, right? Well, you’ve never been more wrong! Fresh water is a vital resource without which specific missions like the Weakness of the Ego quest won’t be completed, and several potions (Weak Health Potion) won’t be brewed.

Where to Find Fresh Water in New World?
Fresh Water in New World can be acquired from water bodies like lakes, rivers, and wells.
I. Wells
Say you are in a farm or settlement with water bodies far away; what do you do? You look for wells. They can easily be spotted within settlements like the one in Windsward next to the post-board.
Upon reaching one, get close to it, and the option to draw water from it should appear. Interact with it by pressing ‘E’ and your inventory will be filled with about 15+ water every time.
If you have to collect water quickly in bulk, then wells should be avoided. After pulling water out once, a well takes minutes to be repleted with this natural resource again.
II. Lakes and Rivers
Open the map, and you’ll find a plethora of rivers and lakes. Just hop into the closest water body (careful not to drown), and an option to interact with it by pressing ‘E’ will appear on the screen.
Note: Do not go to the swampy biomes of Cutlass Keys and Weaver’s Fen, as salt water is found here, and it can’t be gathered, unlike fresh water.
Press the button to acquire water. On top of this, no gathering tool is needed to collect water. It just somehow goes into your inventory. All you have to do is be in close proximity to a water body.
It must be kept in mind if you have to collect vast amounts of water, then a river or lake must be preferred. They are never short of water as opposed to a well.
