Diablo 4 reintroduces the iconic Runes and Runewords system, accessible only through the Vessel of Hatred DLC.
To access this system, ensure you have the Vessel of Hatred DLC installed and progress through the main story. With the Rune system unlocked you can explore various methods to build a diverse collection, dramatically enhancing your character’s abilities.
Let’s look at all the different types of Runes and how to farm them to unlock your character’s full potential.
1. Farming Runes in Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred DLC
In Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred DLC, the classic Rune system from Diablo 2 returns, allowing players to craft powerful Runewords by socketing Runes into gear. These customizable enchantments combine Trigger and Effect mechanics, influenced by Ritual and Invocation Runes.
After completing the “Fundament of Faith” quest in the Vessel of Hatred campaign, players can start collecting Runes. With hundreds of Runes to discover and limitless Runeword combinations, expanding your collection requires participation in specific in-game activities.
Here are eight methods to farm Runes in Diablo IV:
- Conquer Vessel of Hatred campaign bosses.
- Earn Whisper Caches through Tree of Whispers tasks.
- Defeat World Bosses.
- Clear Strongholds.
- Use Tributes in Kurast Undercity.
- Utilize Seething Opal of Socketables.
- Craft at the Jeweler.
- Trade with fellow players.
i. Conquer Vessel of Hatred Campaign Bosses
- The Vessel of Hatred campaign in Diablo 4 offers a reliable method for farming Runes, essential for crafting powerful Runewords.
- As players progress through the engaging storyline, they’ll encounter many powerful bosses that drop valuable Runes upon defeat.
- Players can maximise their Rune farming potential by completing campaign quests efficiently, optimizing gear and skills, and tackling higher difficulty levels.
ii. Earn Whisper Caches through Tree of Whispers tasks
- Diablo 4 players can increase their Rune collection by completing tasks for the Tree of Whispers that reward whisper caches containing Runes.
- The impact of cache quality on Rune rarity is still uncertain, but rumours suggest that Legendary caches may increase the chances of obtaining Legendary Runes.
- As players explore this method, they’ll find it offers a reliable and time-efficient way to accumulate Runes.
iii. Defeat World Bosses
- World Bosses in Diablo 4 provide a challenging yet lucrative opportunity to acquire Runes consistently. Season 6’s revamped difficulty tiers and improved loot have attracted many players.
- With more participants, finding groups is now easier, allowing players to tackle these daunting battles and reap the rewards. Players can reliably accumulate Runes by defeating World Bosses, making this method a strong Rune-farming strategy.
- The collaborative nature of these battles also encourages social interaction and camaraderie among players.
iv. Clear Strongholds
- Clearing Strongholds for the first time rewards players with Magic-quality Rune drops, which, despite being lower-tier, hold significant value.
- These Runes often provide meaningful Offering bonuses for simple actions, such as using a healing potion.
- Farming Strongholds allows players to collect Magic Runes, which can be traded for Rare or Legendary variants, giving way to more powerful Runes.
v. Use Tributes in Kurast Undercity
- Diablo 4’s Kurast Undercity offers a unique rune-farming strategy that uses Tributes.
- Players can ensure a Rune reward upon completion by investing these special items at the outset of an Undercity run, provided they’ve achieved Attunement Rank 1.
- This approach provides a refreshing respite from the unpredictability of other farming methods, guaranteeing Rune drops.
vi. Utilize Seething Opal of Socketables
- In Diablo 4, the Seething Opal of Socketables functions similarly to Elixirs but with the added benefit of stackable effects, allowing players to amplify their gains.
- By utilizing the Seething Opal of Socketables, players can significantly increase the drop rate of Gem Fragments from enemies and, thus, gain a chance to receive Rune drops.
- Players can also reap additional rewards, including accelerated XP gains and enhanced reputation with the Zakarum Remnants.
vii. Craft at the Jeweler
- The Jeweler in Diablo 4 provides a valuable service for players seeking to refresh their Rune collection. Players can craft a new, random Rune by trading three identical unwanted Runes.
- Although the resulting Rune’s rarity may not directly correlate with the traded Runes’, this method allows players to repurpose excess duplicates, reducing inventory clutter and increasing the chances of obtaining desired Runes.
viii. Trade with Fellow players
- In Diablo 4, player-to-player trading creates a community-driven marketplace to strategically acquire and exchange Runes.
- Since Runes aren’t bound to characters, players can swap them freely. This flexibility allows players to hunt specific Runes and forge trade partnerships.
- By networking with fellow players, individuals can consolidate and trade redundant Runes at the Jeweler, optimizing their collections.
