Throughout your entire journey in God of War: Ragnarok, you’ll be facing all kinds of creatures and monsters from the 9 realms, in both main story missions and side missions. One of the more difficult bosses in the main story is the rift-tearing serpent called Nidhogg. You’ll encounter it when you visit Vanaheim for the first time with Freya.
The Nidhogg will prevent Freya from removing the spell that keeps her away from all the realms other than Midgard. Since you’ll be fighting Nidhogg with Kratos, make sure you have the best armor equipped and the correct skills unlocked for both weapons.
First Phase
For the first phase of the boss fight, the creature will remain in its place and all you need to do is deal damage to its head as much as possible. The more damage you do, the easier it will be to get to the next phase. It will attempt to bite you and attack you with its tail, block those and dodge away from the shockwaves that it releases on the ground. Keep fighting it until an R3 prompt appears on top of its head and then you’ll be able to pull it out from the realm tear.
Now the Nidhogg is free and in the open, and it will move around the arena. The moveset will still remain the same so it shouldn’t be a problem for you. Just block and parry the yellow indicator attacks and dodge away from the red indicator unblockable attacks.
Break the blue indicator attacks by using your shield and pressing L1 twice on your controller. Fight it until a cutscene plays and Freya finally joins the fight as a companion.
Second Phase
The Nidhogg will now stick to a pillar in the area and his moveset will change. Now the creature will shoot laser beams at you using its tail and will also throw large projectiles at you using portals. Watch its tail closely, whenever you notice the tail opening a rift, you know that an attack is coming which is unblockable so dodge quickly.
At this point of the boss fight, Freya will start to put Sigils on pillars that you’ll be able to hit with your Axe. Throw the Axe at the Sigil placed on the pillar where the Nidhogg is, and it’ll make the creature fall from the pillar. The serpent will be on the ground stunned so this opening will let you deal massive amounts of damage to it.
After this opening ends, the creature will again climb up a pillar. Fight it until Freya places more Sigils on the pillar but this time use your Blades of Chaos to activate the Sigils which will knock the creature to the ground. The creature will then use an attack where I’ll suck up some rocks and then launch a huge ball of stone at you. Dodge that as it’s unblockable.
An R3 prompt will appear again and you’ll be taken to the final stage where you’ll want to unleash everything you’ve got in order to defeat the creature. The attacks won’t change so just use everything you’ve got.
After a sufficient beating, the final R3 prompt will appear, after which you’ll be presented with a glorious cutscene where Freya and Kratos team up and take down the Nidhogg and you’ll successfully defeat the creature.
Rewards for defeating the Nidhogg
- KRATOS XP – 2000
- AMULET
- FROZEN FLAME
These are the rewards you’ll receive after defeating the Nidhogg and Freya forgives Kratos for Baldur’s death.
