Guide to Complete Horse Guai Quest- Get Dark Thunder Spell in Black Myth Wukong

There are plenty of quests in Black Myth Wukong where you must interact with a certain NPC. While most of them can be completed within a chapter, one spans several chapters and takes some time to finish. 

The Horse Guai quest is a hidden quest that revolves around an NPC- Ma Tianba, or Horse Guai. His story is quite tragic, but if you complete his questline, you can transform into him using a special Transformation Spell.

How to complete the Horse Guai quest in Black Myth Wukong?

To complete the Horse Guai hidden quest, players should interact with the Horse Guai NPC in all five chapters of Black Myth Wukong. The list of all the interactions is as follows-

  • The first interaction with Horse Guai (Chapter 1)
  • Find Horse Guai in Sandgate Village (Chapter 2)
  • Interact with Horse Guai in New Thunderclap Temple (Chapter 3)
  • Free Horse Guai from the Cocoon in Webbed Hollow (Chapter 4)
  • Defeat the Keeper of the Flaming Mountains in Furnace Valley (Chapter 5)
  • Meet Horse Guai in Furnace Valley (Chapter 5)

Missing out on any of the interactions will lead to the failure of the quest. 

I. The First Interaction with Horse Guai (Chapter 1)

The Back Hills Shrine will be the first location where players must interact with the Horse Guai to start its hidden quest. Teleport to the Shrine located in the Bamboo Grove and follow the path down. At the bottom, turn left and enter the cave. You’ll find the Horse Guai sitting on your right. Talk to him and finish the dialogue.

II. Find Horse Guai in Sandgate Village (Chapter 2)

In Chapter 2, you can find the Horse Guai in Sandgate Village. From the Village Entrance Shrine, cross the gap using the small wooden bridge. Follow the path to the right until you see small shrine-like buildings on a hill. After passing them, turn left until you encounter an enemy with a shield in front of a building. 

Defeat the enemy, go around the building, and follow the slope to the village. Look for a large shrine with a pillar where the Horse Guai is tied. Interact with him.

III. Interact with Horse Guai in New Thunderclap Temple (Chapter 3)

You can find the Horse Guai in chapter 3 at the New Thunderclap Temple. Starting from the Temple Entrance Shrine, go through the temple doors and follow the statue’s left side to the back exit. Keep going until you reach a set of stairs. Go down the stairs and enter the building.

Once inside, take the stairs to the right to leave the area. Then, turn left and follow the path to a series of wooden pillars. You’ll find the Horse Guai behind the fifth pillar. Talk to him until his dialogue ends.

IV. Free Horse Guai from the Cocoon in Webbed Hollow (Chapter 4)

Head to the Middle Hollow Shrine, then follow the path until you spot a torch on your left. Go down to the open area using the platforms, where you will encounter the Centipede Guai. Beat the boss, get its Spirit, and continue along the path to the back of the area.

Descend the slope and turn left to reach the bottom. There, you will find a yellow cocoon. Strike it to release the Horse Guai. After a brief cutscene, speak to the NPC and go through all of his dialogue. 

V. Defeat Keeper of the Flaming Mountains (Chapter 5)

Head down the path from the Valley Entrance Shrine until you reach two large pillars leading into a magma area. Keep going until you come across the Cloudy Mist, Misty Cloud boss. Defeat it and then go up the stairs to face the Keeper of Flaming Mountains boss.

Note: Make sure to free Horse Guai from his cocoon before defeating this boss, or else you might fail the quest.

VI. Final Meeting with the Horse Guai and obtaining Dark Thunder Transformation (Chapter 5)

After defeating the Keeper of Flaming Mountains, leave the Valley Entrance Keeper’s Shrine and turn left. Then, head down the path into the magma area. After turning right, you’ll reach a statue where you’ll see the Horse Guai for the last time.

After completing the interaction, you must defeat him to finish the questline. When you defeat him, check the statue. You will see a whip hanging from it. Interact with the whip and choose “Pull Forcefully”. This will allow you to obtain the whip and automatically unlock the Dark Thunder Transformation.
