How to Complete the Conflict in Conviction Quest – Starfield: Shattered Space

In Starfield: Shattered Space, you must assist and earn the support of three key houses within House Va’ruun to gain entry to the Scaled Citadel. One of those houses is House Veth’aal, situated at The Keep in Va’ruun’kai.

House Veth’aal’s leader, Viktor, reveals that his son Vaeric has abandoned his claim, deeming him a traitor worthy of execution. To secure House Veth’aal’s allegiance, you must locate Vaeric and determine his fate as part of the Conflict in Conviction Quest.

In Starfield’s Shattered Space DLC, the Conflict in Conviction sees Viktor, the leader of House Veth’aal, task you with hunting down Vaeric and deciding his fate.

You can spare his life and take his Signet Ring for Viktor, persuade him to return home, or attack him. Once you’ve chosen, return to Viktor with either the Signet Ring or Vaeric himself to complete the quest and form an alliance with House Veth’aal.

Here’s how to find Vaeric to complete the Conflict in Conviction quest in Shattered Space.

1. Starting the Quest

  • After concluding your conversation with Viktor at The Keep, proceed to Herald’s Rest, a popular bar in Dazra where Vaeric was often seen.
  • Inside, you’ll find three key NPCs with objective markers. Attempt to persuade them to reveal Vaeric’s location. Even if persuasion fails, the third NPC will divulge that Vaeric has a friend, Tane, who might know his whereabouts.
  • Conveniently, Tane is expected to arrive at the bar shortly. After a brief wait, Tane arrives at Herald’s Rest, distinguishable by his facial and neck tattoos.
  • Tane reveals he’s tracking Vaeric using a device and offers to share the location for 1,000 Credits. Paying Tane is the simplest and only option.

2. Tracking Vaeric’s Location

  • With the mission objective now set to “Search northwest of Dazra” for Vaeric, fast travel to the Keep Armory to receive the Tracker from Tane.
  • As you journey northwest, periodically check the “Distance to Target” alerts on the top right of your screen to gauge your proximity. Head towards the central cliffs, distinguished by two towering structures, leading you to the Hamadi Station.
  • Although the main route is closed, take the narrow path to the right to proceed. The final stretch requires navigating cliff jumps, and upon completion, you’ll arrive at the Abandoned Camp.
  • Here, your objective updates to “Examine the Camp,” signaling the next phase of your mission.

3. Examining the Abandoned Camp

Upon arriving at the Abandoned Camp, search the area to uncover four important clues:

  • Inside the tent: Vaeric’s Camp Log Entry #1 and a Tracker on the table.
  • Next to the bed: Vaeric’s Camp Log Entry #2.
  • At the digging site: Visible footprints.
  • Beside the tent: Bloodstains on a nearby boulder.

As you conclude your investigation, three level 49 Foul Vortex Horrors will attack you and Tane.

  • These agile and aggressive foes wield energy manipulation abilities, teleporting themselves to you while unleashing potent melee attacks.
  • Maintaining distance is crucial to defeating these Vortex Horrors, as their attacks are less effective at range. Tane will be useless, as he’ll get knocked down quickly in battle.
  • After defeating the Vortex Horrors, share your findings with Tane, prompting a manual tracking effort to locate Vaeric by following his footprints.

4. Searching Irina’s Farm

  • Track Vaeric’s path using the quest markers leading you to Irina’s Farm. Upon inquiry, Irina initially denies knowledge of Vaeric’s whereabouts.
  • However, you can uncover the truth by paying 1,000 credits, passing a medicine skill check, threatening her, or searching the farm for clues.
  • Regardless of the method, you’ll discover that Vaeric headed to an abandoned farm northward. New quest markers guide you to the farmhouse, where you investigate further.
  • Access Vaeric’s computer logs and retrieve Vaeric’s Log from the upstairs table. As you exit to share your findings with Tane, Vaeric unexpectedly emerges, revealing he’s been living on the farm and caring for animals.

5. Deciding Vaeric’s Fate

  • When speaking with Vaeric, you have two options: hostility or empathy. You can choose the dialogue options that emphasize his father’s wish for his execution and simply kill him off to complete your quest.
  • But by listening to Vaeric, you’ll discover his true motivations: a desire for independence from his father’s political legacy. He yearns to forge his own path, untethered by the weight of family obligations.
  • Despite feeling deeply remorseful for the pain he’s caused his father, Vaeric remains resolute in his decision to decline the heirship to House Veth’aal.
  • After exhausting your dialogue options, here are the choices you’ll be left with to decide Vaeric’s fate:
Persuade (Neutral Outcome)Kill (Worst Outcome)Spare (Best Outcome)
Pass multiple Persuasion checks, and Vaeric will acknowledge his rash actions after Vashti’s death, accepting to return with you. Viktor will be angry, but Luther and Vitoria will intervene, convincing Viktor to forgive, resulting in a happy family reunion. However, you’ll forfeit credits.Eliminate Vaeric (and potentially Tane) and retrieve the House Veth’aal Signet Ring. Viktor will be pleased, rewarding 1,000 credits and XP. However, Vitoria and Luther will be distraught. Note: Killing Tane is completely unnecessary. So is killing Vaeric, honestly.Grant Vaeric freedom from House Veth’aal while still obtaining the Signet Ring, deceiving Viktor into believing his son is dead. You can also get 10,000 credits alongside the Signet Ring from Vaeric for sparing his life. Though Vitoria and Luther will initially be distraught, you can secretly confide the truth to Vitoria on the balcony.
Deciding Vaeric’s Fate

Upon completing the mission, head to Herald’s Rest to recruit Tane (assuming you didn’t choose the option to kill him), bringing closure to the Conflict in Conviction quest in Starfield: Shattered Space.
