Prepare For Madness – How to Defeat Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame in Elden Ring

Tarnished warrior, how did you find yourself in the wretched depths of the Abyssal woods? A menacing, ghostly mansion looms in the distance, concealing unimaginable horrors and the fearsome Lord of Frenzied Flame.

If you’re brave (or foolhardy) enough to face him, you’ve come to the perfect place to steel yourself for the madness that awaits within the manor’s walls.

Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame, is a powerful and intimidating Legend Boss embodying the intense power of the Frenzied Flame in Elden Ring’s Shadow of The Erdtree DLC. This encounter offers a glimpse into an alternate path that players could have taken in the base game’s endings.

Defeating this boss is optional, as players can progress the expansion’s story without beating Midra. However, for those seeking a challenge, Midra awaits in the Abyssal Woods region, serving as the final boss of the Midra’s Manse Minor Dungeon.

Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame, is an optional Legend Boss with a fiery head that unleashes devastating fire-based attacks. To win against him, you’ll have to study Midra’s patterns, capitalize on vulnerabilities, and practice restraint in your attacks.

Prioritize survival by retreating to safety after landing a few hits rather than risking instant defeat. Patience and opportunistic attacks are key to winning against the Lord of Frenzied Flame.

As one of the ten formidable Remembrance bosses, defeating Midra is vital to unlocking powerful weapons and spells. Prepare for a grueling fight, as Midra’s abilities can inflict madness, dealing massive damage and making a swift victory essential to avoid his devastating attacks.

The journey to reach Midra is complex and lengthy, requiring navigation through the perilous Abyssal Woods area. The boss arena is situated within the Midra’s Manse dungeon, a structure located in the southwestern region of the Abyssal Woods.

To reach the Abyssal Woods, start at the Main Promenade in Shadow Keep, climb the bridge with Shadow Militiamen, and descend a ladder on the right to find a stone coffin. This will transport you to the Recluses’ River Upstream, where you’ll platform down rocks and cliffs to reach the Darklight Catacomb. Defeat Jori, Elder Inquisitor, to gain access to the Abyssal Woods.

Make your way south, evading Madness enemies, until Midra’s Manse comes into view. Enter the manse and turn left to find a gold painting, which conceals a secret passage leading to a ruined library.

Navigate the library, reaching the Midra’s Library Site of Grace, where a painting of Midra and Nanaya awaits. Interact with it to reveal a hidden path leading to the Second Floor Chamber Site of Grace, where Midra’s ominous screams will guide you into the boss room.

2. Preparing For Battle

Before facing Midra, it’s essential to fortify your character by exploring the Land of Shadow and gathering Scadutree Fragments. These fragments will significantly enhance your defenses, making you more resilient against the powerful foes in Shadow of the Erdtree. The more Scadutree Blessings you activate, the easier the fight will become.

  • Prioritize upgrading your Scadutree Blessing to at least level 10.
  • Use weapons or skills imbued with Holy damage to maximize damage output, like Miquella’s or Fundamentalist spells, as they appear to be effective against Midra.
  • Avoid relying on Fire damage, as the boss possesses high resistance to it.
  • Midra is vulnerable to Frost, Bleed, and Poise damage, making weapons like Zamor Curved Sword ideal for quickly stacking damage.
  • Boost Focus with accessories like Mottled Necklace or Clarifying Horn Charm, and equip curative magic to manage Madness buildup during the fight.
  • The Clarifying Horn Talisman +2 boosts your Focus by 180, significantly enhancing your resistance to Madness.
  • The rare Flamedrake Talisman +3, found within the DLC, fortifies your resistance to Fire damage, protecting you from the powerful flames of Midra’s attacks.
  • The Two-Headed Turtle Talisman provides a vital boost to stamina regeneration, allowing players to evade, block, and strike with renewed energy and vigor, making it an essential item in this battle.
  • Consider equipping the Stonebarbed and Spiked Cracktear to your Wondrous Physick to boost your charge attacks and enhance your combat performance.

While NPC summons are unavailable in this battle, you can summon Spirit Ashes for help. This tactic creates openings to land attacks between the boss’s various moves, making the fight more manageable.

Some strong spirit ashes worth using in this fight are Black Knife Tiche, Jolan and Anna Spirit Ashes, and, of course, The Mimic Tear.

3. Combat Tactics

Initially, Midra appears as a feeble old man who can still hurt you with a jump attack that causes madness build-up. Dodge towards him just before he lands to avoid the grab. He’ll also swipe at you, but his attacks can be easily dodged. Attack him relentlessly until a cutscene will play, and the true battle against the Lord of Frenzied Flame will begin.

Now’s the time to summon a Spirit Ash to aid in the battle. If the previous phase induced madness, quickly cleanse it with an item or spell to prevent Midra’s upcoming frenzied flame attacks, as it will both inflict fire damage and further increase the madness meter.

Here starts the main battle –

  • Flame Strands: As you step into the boss arena, Midra summons fiery strands. These tendrils bear lethal potential. Swiftly roll back multiple times to evade the attack.
  • Sword Combos: Midra unleashes rapid blade combos, consisting of 2-3 strikes, slashes, or thrusts. Dodge to the left or right to avoid the attacks. As the combo ends, use the brief window of opportunity to counterattack.
  • Frenzied Flames: Midra hurls bursts of fiery magic, scorching the ground. Quickly dodge forward to avoid each blast as it erupts.

  • Plunging Fire: Midra plunges down with a piercing attack, followed by an explosive burst of thorns and flames. Dodge to the side to avoid the initial strike, then move towards Midra to evade the subsequent fiery blast.
  • Flame Explosion: Midra creates a fireball that resembles his head, which slowly descends and then explodes. Run away from it to avoid its destructive power. Later, at 25% health, Midra floats up engulfed in flames, shaking the arena. Seize this moment to roll away from the inferno.

Midra’s intense assault requires a delicate balance of attack and defense. Avoid impulsive decisions, striking at the right moment and then seeking shelter behind your shield. Adapt your strategy to survive the battle.

May your resolve burn brighter than the flames of Midra’s domain!

Defeating Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame, will reward you with 410,000 runes as well as Remembrance of the Lord of Frenzied Flame, which you can take back to Finger Reader Enia at the Roundtable Hold in exchange for the Greatsword of Damnation or Midra’s Flame of Frenzy incantation.

The Greatsword of Damnation, a powerful weapon that scales with Strength and Faith, delivers massive damage through its Golden Crux skill, making it a formidable asset in PvP combat.

Meanwhile, Midra’s Flame of Frenzy, a high-Faith Incantation, unleashes a concentrated blast of Frenzied Flame damage, recreating the intense attacks from the boss battle.

Both are powerful options, but the Greatsword stands as a better choice due to its lower stat requirements and ability to deal physical and holy damage. The Incantation, on the other hand, requires high faith and may not affect all enemies.

While both are valuable, it’s recommended to keep them instead of consuming the Remembrance for runes, which would only yield a small amount (30,000).
