Flying Dragon Agheel, found at the Dragon-burnt ruins of the Limgrave Lake, is one of the first-encountered optional Greater Enemy Boss of Elden Ring.

Facing Agheel as a new player can be quite challenging. The dragon’s fiery attacks and wide range make approaching it risky. To defeat this formidable foe, one must stay on the move and be patient while attacking. And if you’re looking for a strategic advantage, aim for its head, where you’ll deal an impressive +50% damage.

Agheel tends to remain hidden until you approach the Dragon-burnt ruins. Once you do, it descends from the sky, catching unsuspecting followers in its flames near the Southern bonfire at Limgrave Lake. After that initial encounter, Agheel stays there permanently, and will attack you if you get too close.

This dragon boasts an impressive 3,200 HP, making it a formidable opponent. Its defense stands at 106, and it maintains a stance of 120.

To defeat the Flying Dragon Agheel, consider using the spectral steed called Torrent. You can find Torrent early in the game Elden Ring. Here’s how to unlock it:

  • Head to the ‘Gatefront Ruins’ Site of Grace, which is just south of Stormveil Castle.
  • There, you’ll encounter Melina, who will grant you the power to summon Torrent.
  • Ensure you have the Spectral Steed Whistle equipped as a quick item in your inventory. If Torrent falls in battle, you can summon it again and continue the fight.

While Agheel doesn’t have a specific weakness to any attribute in Elden Ring, consider using Glintstone Pebble attacks whenever possible.

Kaiden Sellsword Ashes can deal significant damage before disappearing. Employ the Rock Sling for powerful stance damage and apply Dragonwound Grease for a 30% bonus.

Keep in mind that Agheel is slightly vulnerable to Piercing damage, making it more effective than other attacks.

2. Summons

When facing the Flying Dragon Agheel, consider summoning Bloody Finger Hunter Yura as an NPC ally. You’ll find Yura just north of the Seaside Ruins Site of Grace. His summon sign will be next to the Stake of Marika for the Agheel fight.

Yura specializes in bleed-focused attacks, which can be quite effective. Even if he struggles to keep up with Agheel, he serves as a distraction, drawing the dragon’s attention away from you.

However, be cautious when summoning a player for co-op. Co-op increases the boss’s HP and prevents you from riding Torrent during the battle. You can also summon spirit ashes for this fight.

3. Combat Tactics

When facing the Flying Dragon Agheel, keep moving constantly. Circle around the dragon while riding Torrent, and attack swiftly with melee strikes or ranged magic whenever you get the chance.

Agheel’s main attacks are forward-facing. Being underneath him helps you avoid the worst hits. Watch out for his stomp and spin attacks.

  • Short Wing Swipes: These are quick, low strikes. To dodge them, double jump with Torrent.
  • Standing Fire Breath: Agheel crouches and releases an expanding cone of fire, tracking the player. Ride Torrent diagonally left or right—away from the flames and toward Agheel—as the cone narrows near its mouth.

Remember, once Agheel’s stance is broken, it becomes susceptible to critical hits. Landing those well-timed blows will deal an extra 20% damage throughout the rest of the battle.

When Agheel takes flight, watch out for two things:

  • Fire Breath: Keep an eye on the fire column and move away from it. Avoid running parallel to it.
  • Slam Attack: If Agheel descends without breathing fire (around two seconds in the air), strafe around it. Backing away is risky, instead circle around, especially if you’re on horseback.

Staying away from the boss and using ranged attacks is a smart approach. It keeps you safe and allows you to chip away at Agheel’s health.

While Agheel is an optional boss, it’s still worth facing for the rewards—especially if you’re a faith-based character—and to gain insights into dragon attack patterns, because this won’t be the only Dragon you will face in this game.

Defeating Agheel grants you 5,000 Runes, which can boost your early levels. Additionally, you’ll receive a Dragon Heart. Take this heart to the glowing red statue on Dragon Communion Island (westward) and exchange it for a powerful Dragon-based Sorcery.

By defeating Agheel, you unlock a new spell at the East Caelid Cathedral storeAgheel’s Flame. In this form, you briefly become a dragon, spewing fire upon targets below.

To acquire Agheel’s Flame, you’ll need to spend 2 Dragon Hearts. You have two choices: either save up now or trade in the heart you currently possess for a more affordable option.

Remember that all dragon spells, including Agheel’s Flame, are Incantations – meaning they can only be cast by Faith builds with spellcasting Seals.

Tarnished! Brace yourself for your very first dragon battle in the game – Fear not as your efforts will yield rich rewards and your victory will also serve as valuable training for the many more winged terrors you will encounter on this journey.
