The Arrowverse’s final show on the CW, The Flash, wrapped up its series finale in the last episode of season 9 on Wednesday. After Eddie Thawne revealed himself as the Negative Speed Force’s vessel, he immersed the blue crystal into him and used its powers to bring back some of the Flash’s most dangerous enemies.
The evil speedsters Zoom, Savitar, Reverse Flash, and Godspeed are then greeted by Eddie, who transforms into Cobalt Blue, and they head to kill Flash and reset a new timeline. Meanwhile, Barry phases into the present, checking on Iris, who’s gone into labor, and informing her about Cobalt Blue and his purpose.
The sinister speedsters arrive, and Iris yells, “Run, Barry. Run!” Allen does just that, where the heroes of STAR Labs face the legion of doom – I don’t mean that literally, of course.
Chillblaine, Khione, Virtue, XS, Flash, and Wavelength face the Negative Speed Force’s advocates, and after a long and nail-biting fight scene (or that’s how it was intended), all of the Negative Speed Force speedsters are destroyed save Cobalt Blue. Eddie absorbs the speed of the slain speedsters, and Barry wants to save him from the speed OD.
Khione sends him into the Negative Speed Force, where Barry gets a severe beating from Cobalt Blue. But Barry’s mission was not to defeat him but to propose a peace treaty – how the two speed forces can work side by side and maintain a balance.
Blue agrees to the terms, warning Barry there might be times when they wouldn’t agree, but the two lay down their metaphorical lightning bolts for Iris. After the threat is averted, Chester is revived with his new powers, Khione leaves this plane, and the viewers see Kaitlin Snow return without her other half, Killer Frost.
Barry rushed to the hospital, where they welcomed Baby Nora with Joe singing her a lullaby. At Nora’s party, Joe proposes to Cecile, and later Barry manifests the speed force in a lightning strike to create three new speedsters.
Avery Ho, Max Mercury, and Jess Chambers will be the new keepers of Central City with the Flash retired. Judging by the flash of lightning in Baby Nora’s eyes, she’ll probably join them in the future.
The show’s series finale reminded the longtime fans why they stuck around for so long since the nostalgic parallels near the end were too much to ignore. With Grant Gustin’s Flash out and three new speedsters in, the legacy of the Scarlet Speedster will carry on in Central City and the CW even though the show is officially over.
