VFX Artists Explain The Suicide Squad’s Helmet-Reflection Fight Scene

Ever wonder how movies hide cameras and crew members when they have to shoot a scene right in front of the mirror?

If yes, you’re not alone because it has been almost two months since The Suicide Squad came out and im still amazed by THAT helmet-reflection fighting scene.

The scene takes place in Jotunheim as the two members of Task Force X, Rick Flag and Peacemaker fight each other due to ‘conflicting morals.’ Almost entirety of the sequence is shown through the reflection on Peacemaker’s helmet.

It’s an absolutely cool scene. But the age old question arises of how to maintain your artistic vision while still tending to the technical aspect of filming. Of course, not everyone can go all ‘La Haine’ for their mirror sequences, so I guess CGI is the answer.

Thanks to the YouTube channel Corridor Crew, who have a series up on their channel where VFX artists explain, react to and break down various CGI scenes in movies.

To summarize it in simple words, the video explains how the scene was filmed separately and then CGI’ed  onto the helmet and rendered as if it’s a reflection. So the actual shot was distorted according to the helmet’s shape and surface textures.

They also point out how the bloom directly reflected on a reflective surface would be different to the one recorded on a camera. Yet it’s more or less an insignificant detail that doesn’t mar how cool the scene is.

This explanation matches to what director James Gunn had previously tweeted when answering a fan question about the scene.

Doesn’t matter what technique Gunn uses, the man can make one care about a damn tree and shark more than any other ‘real’ characters in a film. And that’s really something.

With the Peacemaker spinoff series possibly getting a trailer/first look at this year’s DC FanDome on October 16, it’ll be interesting to see how Gunn redeems the character or makes him even more of an anti-hero.

Corridor Crew also has another video breaking down why Zack Snyder’s Justice League was better than Joss Whedon’s mess. Check it out below if you like:
