Yesterday’s episode of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier took a turn for the worse when the MCU’s new Captain America, John Walker, injected himself with the last surviving vial of the super-soldier serum. The brand-new Cap A surprised even the super soldiers of the Flag Smashers with his powers. So exactly how strong is the former US Agent and what could that mean for the show’s plot? Let’s take a look.
The US government hired Walker to fill the empty seat of Captain America following Steve Rogers’ retirement after the events of Avengers: Endgame. Rogers, who chose to part with his signature mantle to spend his retirement with Peggy Carter, passed on the shield to his dear friend Sam Wilson aka the Falcon.
However, after Falcon refused the title, John Walker was placed as the new Captain America due to his military history and his all-over American sweetheart look. But his shortcoming came in his lack of matching up to Rogers’ superhuman strength.
We could often see him feel humiliated and inept as a replacement to one of the most powerful soldiers in the country. In the latest episode, he is pinned down by the Wakandans who, he notes, ashamed, are not even super soldiers. His moral weaknesses are up for display long before he bludgeons a Flag Smasher with his shield in vengeance.
No wonder he fails to control the urge to drink the super soldier serum off of Karli, which was also the last vial left. Walker then puts his new serum-enhanced abilities on display at the end of episode 4 while battling with the Flag Smashers. His fighting skills become more enhanced, like his senses, and he also develops lightning-fast reflexes, which even help him dodge a knife attack.
Furthermore, he can now easily bend a metal pipe with his bare hands and kicks one of the Smashers through the air. Thus, it can be deduced that he stands at the same level as Steve, and given his open aggressiveness, could be even more powerful.
In the comics, after receiving the serum from the Power Broker, Walker notes that he can lift 10 tons worth of weight. He also received the standard abilities like enhanced speed, agility, durability, and healing.
One thing he is unable to still master is how to use the shield. In the comics, he struggles with it and would often injure others. MCU’s Walker, though, seems to have better control of it, but once his temper’s been tickled, he uses the shield as a deadly weapon.
As for who’s stronger amongst Rogers and Walker, Marvel Comics answered the question long back by pitting both characters against each other in a fight that ended in a draw. During his time in the MCU, Rogers has shown exceptional skill and strength, even battling with a Titan like Thanos.
Compared to the many fights audiences have seen Steve take part in (and come out victorious), Walker’s debut one is not enough to come to a clear judgment. Besides, Walker has already proven himself to be the morally weaker one of the two. But as far as his physical capabilities go, Walker could definitely hold his own in a brawl against Rogers.
As The Falcon and The Winter Soldier approaches its end with only two episodes to go, here’s hoping we are given a more detailed glimpse at Walker’s new powers. Especially with rumors going around about Chris Evans’s Steve Rogers making an appearance in the show, we might be in for a duel between the two. Until then, stay tuned!
