Kratos has grown significantly old in the God of War Norse saga. He has now settled down in the Nordic woods with a wife and a son named Atreus, and all the chaos of the early game’s Greek saga seems as far as Greece itself.
But one lingering question that remains in every gamer’s mind is how old Kratos actually is. A demigod like him must surely be thousands of years old! Right? Actually, no!
Kratos is around 200 years old in God of War Ragnarok, which takes place three years after God of War (2018). Unfortunately, as of now, the games and novels have not given him an official age yet.
The good thing is that we can deduce his age with the help of hints present in the games and the novel. How, you ask? Let’s dive into it.
150-year-old Spartan Relic Illustrating Kratos Found in Tyr’s Temple
Well, During the quest “A Realm Beyond,” in the God of War (2018), Freya says,
The Tyr’s Temple has been asleep underwater for almost a hundred and fifty winters. It needs only the light of Bifrost to reawaken.
Freya
This statement means that no one has entered or left the Tyr’s Temple in the past 150 years as it was submerged underwater all this while.
Later in the game, Kratos finds a Spartan vase (relic) in Tyr’s Vault within Tyr’s Temple. This vase showcased him as the “Ghost of Sparta” wielding the Blades of Chaos in Greece.
Now, we know that this vase could only have been stored in the temple before it was submerged in water for 150 years, which means that Kratos has grown around 150 years since the time he had the Blades of Chaos. So, considering all these facts, the actual age of Kratos must be 150 years plus the years before he started serving Ares and became the Ghost of Sparta.
Kratos Before Turning into the Ghost of Sparta
The Spartans only had children beyond the age of 30, as they were not permitted to reside with their wives before that time in history.
Spartan Kratos had a daughter named Calliope, whom he accidentally killed while she was quite young (approx. ten years). This indicates that when Kratos was cursed to wear the ashes of his deceased wife and daughter, becoming the Ghost of Sparta, he was around 40 years old (30+10).
Therefore, by summing these three values (150+30+10), we may estimate Kratos’ age in God of War to be between 190 and 200. (2018). It’s conceivable that he is closer to 200 than my preliminary estimation suggests.
