God of War (2018) takes place years after the events of God of War 3. Kratos, the fierce spartan warrior and a demigod who once lived for the sole purpose of eradicating all the Greek Pantheons, has now grown old and settled down in the Nordic woods with a second wife and a son named Atreus.
This character and story development shocked all the fans of the GOW series and raised many complex questions, like how Kratos reached Midgard and why? I have already answered these questions, so go ahead and give them a read. For now, I will try to answer another significant question that is, “How old is Kratos in God of War (2018)?”
Kratos is around 200 years old in God of War (2018) and God of War: Ragnarok. Unfortunately, as of now, Kratos has no officially confirmed age.
Even though the games do not talk about the Kratos’ age, we can still deduce some details about it by analyzing the game events and characters’ dialogues.
Around 150 Years Old Spartan Relic Depicting Kratos Found in Tyr’s Temple
During the quest ”A Realm Beyond,” in the early game, Freya says, “The Tyr’s Temple has been asleep underwater for almost a hundred and fifty winters. It needs only the light of Bifrost to reawaken.” This statement means that no one has entered or left the Tyr’s Temple in the past 150 years as it was submerged underwater for that long.
Later in the game, Kratos finds a spartan vase (relic) in Tyr’s Vault within Tyr’s Temple. This vase depicted a graphic of himself as the “Ghost of Sparta” wielding the Blades of Chaos in Greece.
Now, we know that this vase could have only been stored in the temple before it was submerged into water for 150 years, which means that Kratos has grown around 150 years since the time he had Blades of Chaos. So, considering all these facts, the actual age of Kratos must be 150 years + the years before he started serving Ares and became the Ghost of Sparta.
Kratos’ Age Before Turning into the Ghost of Sparta
Historically speaking, the Spartans were not allowed to live with their wives until they reached the age of 30, which means they only had kids after that age.
Kratos, a spartan, had a daughter named Calliope, who he unknowingly killed at a very young age (approx. ten years). This event suggests that Kratos was around 40 years old (30+10) when he was cursed to wear the ashes of his dead wife and daughter, making him the Ghost of Sparta.
So, by adding all these numbers (150+30+10), we can conclude that Kratos is approx. 190-200 years old in God of War (2018). This is a rough estimate, so it is more than possible that he is closer to 200.
How old are Kratos and Atreus in God of War: Ragnarok?
Kratos is around 200 years old, and Atreus is 14 years old in God of War: Ragnarok which takes place three years after the events of God of War (2018).
Ragnarok- a catastrophe that will destroy all the nine realms is prophecized to occur after a three-year-long winter called Fimbulwinter in the Norse Mythology. The same is confirmed by Atreus in the God of War: Ragnarok trailer. The Fimbulwinter is foretold to begin the day Baldur dies, whom Kratos kills at the end of God of War (2018).
Atreus is officially confirmed to be eleven years old in God of War (2018) by the game’s official novelization by J.M Barlog, and so he will be 14 years old, after three years, in God of War: Ragnarok. On the other hand, this three-year leap won’t significantly affect the age of two centuries old demigod Kratos.
About God of War(2018)
Developed by Santa Monica Studios, God of War is a single-player action-adventure game. Unlike the previous installments of the franchise that deals with Greek mythology, this installment is set in Norse lore.
Before dying, Kratos’ second wife’s last wish is for her to be cremated at the highest peak of the nine realms. Therefore, with his son, Atreus, Kratos embarks on a difficult journey teeming with monsters and gods to fulfill his wife’s final request.
