God of War (2018) is a soft reboot of the God of War series, which takes place many years after the events of God of War 3, in which Kratos destroyed the entire Greek world by killing all the Gods and Titans in a fit of rage.
Interestingly, this “reboot” introduced Kratos as an aged father with a son named Atreus. This shocking introduction piqued many players’ interests and pushed them to ask several questions about Atreus’ origins, such as how old he is? or is he a god?
Atreus is officially confirmed to be eleven years old in God of War (2018) by the game’s official novelization written by J.M Barlog.
Atreus’ actions throughout the God of War (2018) gameplay also justify his age, as he is portrayed as a typical child who wants to prove his abilities and get recognized by his father. He also throws tantrums, and Kratos, like a responsible father, sweeps up all the troubles he creates.
How old will Atreus be in God of War: Ragnarok?
Atreus will be around 14 years old in God of War: Ragnarok, whose story will take place three years after the events of God of War (2018).
As we know, God of War: Ragnarok is all about, well, Ragnarok, a catastrophic event that will destroy all the nine realms. It is prophecized to occur after a three-year-long winter called Fimbulwinter in Norse Mythology. The Fimbulwinter is foretold to begin the day Baldur dies, whom Kratos kills at the end of God of War (2018).
In the God of War: Ragnarok trailer, we see Atreus as a teenager. He is grown taller, has a deeper voice, and can kill a deer all on his own now, but one thing that does not seem to change is his incompatible relationship with his father.
Gladly, I believe Kratos and Atreus will be able to find peace in their father-son relationship soon in God of War: Ragnarok, as it is confirmed to be the final entry in the Norse saga of the God of War series.
Is Atreus a God in God of War (2018)?
Atreus is a god in God of War (2018). Specifically, he is 1/4 God, 1/2 frost giant, and a 1/4 mortal, as he is the son of Kratos, a demigod, and Laufey, a frost giant.
Additionally, Atreus is not merely any god or giant but the descendant of some of the most powerful beings ever to exist.
Zeus, the supreme Greek god, is his paternal grandfather, and Ymir, the original Jötunn (Giant), the first ever being that came into existence in the nine realms of Norse mythology, is his maternal ancestor.
Is Atreus Loki in God of War (2018)?
Atreus is revealed to be Loki in God of War (2018). At the end of the story gameplay, in Joutenheim, Atreus tells Kratos that the Giants referred to him by the name of Loki.
Kratos instantly confirms that Laufey wanted to name Atreus “Loki” and must have referred him to other giants with the same name.
This reveal is the biggest plot twist of the God of War (2018), and it will be interesting to see its development in the upcoming sequel, God of War: Ragnarok.
However, as shocking as this twist is, it has some significant storyline problems.
According to Norse mythology, Loki, in this case, Atreus, is the father of the World Serpent, Jörmungandr, who we see throughout the gameplay of God of War (2018), which technically should have been impossible!
The existence of an adult Jörmungandr in the same world as kid Atreus means that we might see some intriguing aspects of time travel in God of War: Ragnarok, as it is the only sensible plot device at this point, in my opinion.
About God of War(2018)
Developed by Santa Monica Studios, God of War is a single-player action-adventure game. Unlike the previous installments of the franchise that deals with Greek mythology, this installment is set in Norse lore.
Before dying, Kratos’ second wife’s last wish is for her to be cremated at the highest peak of the nine realms. Therefore, with his son, Atreus, Kratos embarks on a difficult journey teeming with monsters and gods to fulfill his wife’s final request.
