James Gunn Hints at Multiple Villains for ‘The Suicide Squad’

The Suicide Squad’s director has hinted at the upcoming film featuring multiple villains. A standalone sequel to 2016’s Suicide Squad, the upcoming movie will follow the imprisoned convicts of Belle Reve penitentiary on a dangerous new mission to blow up a Nazi-era laboratory.

In a recent interview with Den of Geek, director James Gunn discussed the complete creative control he received from Warner Bros. while making The Suicide Squad. This helped him introduce Starro, whom he considers to be the perfect villain. However, Gunn also hinted at the existence of perhaps more than one antagonist. Check out his statement here:

Starro is hilarious because he’s ridiculous…but he’s also f***ing terrifying. So he works really well as the villain of the movie—as one of the villains, actually.

Although Starro might be the main villain of the movie, the others could be the members of Task Force X themselves, considering that their nefariousness has appealed to fans since the group’s debut in the DC comics. However, since Gunn did not confirm the identities of the other villains, whether this theory is accurate or not remains to be seen.

Back in April, the director announced the movie had been completed ahead of its summer release this year. Having directed the spectacular Guardians of the Galaxy movies, Gunn is currently one of the most in-demand directors due to his talent for adapting comic book stories to the screen with some much-needed hilarity.

Now with The Suicide Squad wrapped up, the director is busy working on his other projects, the Peacemaker spinoff and the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

Following the negative criticism Ayers’ version received, the upcoming sequel will be a soft reboot of its predecessor. It will also bring back the most popular faces, including Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), and Amanda Waller (Viola Davis).

Additionally, joining them are Peacemaker (John Cena), Bloodsport (Idris Elba), King Shark (Sylvester Stallone), and Savant (Michael Rooker), among many others.

Given the pandemic mandate that Warner Bros. gave for its movie releases, The Suicide Squad will make its debut theatrically and on streaming platform HBO Max simultaneously. It is scheduled for release in the US on August 6.
