What are the 7 Quirks Deku gets? What can they do?

The 7 Quirks that Deku currently has are

  • One for All (Transference + Stockpiling),
  • Float, Smokescreen,
  • Blackwhip,
  • Danger Sense,
  • Fa Jin,
  • Gearshift.

Let’s get into what these Quirks can do in order of the 8 users from whom Deku got them.

1. One for All: Fused Quirk Created by 2 Brothers

The One for All was originally created when All for One forcefully implanted his Stockpiling Quirk within his younger brother, Yoichi Shiga.

One for All can do 3 things. It can stockpile physical power, it can manifest the quirks of previous users over enough time, and it can pass your Quirk onto another person.

Yoichi’s inherent Quirk was Transference, which allowed him to transfer a Quirk to another person. When the 2 Quirks merged, they created the ultimate Quirk that can stockpile huge amounts of raw power, enhancing physical abilities to a superhuman level.

It can also be transferred to others, which is how Deku came to inherit it. The One for All has been passed down 8 times in total and contains the consciousness and assimilated Quirks of its users.

2. Gearshift: Quirk of the Second User

Gearshift allows Deku to shift the speed of anything he touches.

This Quirk, also commonly called Transmission, fits Deku’s combat style perfectly, and lets him speed up or slow down his attacks, his targets, and himself.

Since Gearshift has spent so long within the vessels containing the One for All, it has evolved to such a degree that the intense speed makes Deku faster than even All Might. It is also the Quirk that he uses to release the full power of the One for All, being the final Quirk that he unlocked.

He can control speed through 4 different gears, kind of like Luffy’s Devil Fruit powers from One Piece.

Deku unlocked this final Quirk in chapter 368.

With Transmission, he enabled Gearshift: Overdrive and unlocked 120% of the One for All. This is the full power of the One for All, the strength of which manages to topple “Tomura” in chapter 369.

3. Fa Jin: Quirk of the Third User

Fa Jin allows Deku to store and charge kinetic energy inside his body and release it at will, giving him increased output.

This Quirk becomes more powerful each time Deku uses it. It is also easy to recharge since all he has to do is perform some kind of movement to create kinetic energy.

The repeated movements build up motion-based energy for temporary storage and release. Deku uses it along with Blackwhipe to save Overhaul from Nagant.

4. Danger Sense: Quirk of the Fourth User, Hikage Shinomori

Danger Sense lets Deku detect threats and potential dangers nearby.

The stabbing sensation in his head allow Deku to instantly become aware of enemies – kind of like a sixth sense that gives him a physical nudge of foreboding.

This Spidey-sense also picks up malicious intent and thoughts of those around him, giving Deku a practical advantage in most battles.

5. Blackwhip: Quirk of the Fifth User, Daigoro Banjo

Blackwhip allows Deku to create and manipulate whips or ropes of black energy from his body, which can be used to capture opponents and increase his mobility.

The black tendrils act as extra limbs which are not only useful for restrain enemies, but for maneuvering and swinging him from one place to another.

The strength of the tendrils depends on the user’s emotional state, which makes it slightly unreliable during combat.

This is the first Quirk that Deku unlocks after receiving the One for All.

6. Smokescreen: Quirk of the Sixth User, En

Smokescreen lets Deku create a thick shroud of smoke which obscures his opponent’s vision. The smoke can be spread over large distances, enough to cover multiple city blocks.

He can hide himself from view and deliver his punches without the enemy seeing them coming. The Quirk however doesn’t make its user immune to its effects, which means Deku often blindsides himself.

But used alongside other Quirks, Smokescreen has often proved useful.

7. Float: Quirk of the Seventh User, Nana Shimura

Float allows Deku to well, float. It gives him the power of flight, an incredibly powerful ability.

Float also suits Deku’s combat style really well, since being suspended over his opponents gives him better maneuverability, especially when used alongside Blackwhip.

It is the second Quirk that he unlocks after obtaining the One for All.

What is Deku’s main Quirk? How did he get it?

Technically, Deku’s one and only Quirk is the One for All. His other 6 Quirks are a part of the One for All, having being embedded in it due to its merged power of transference and stockpiling.

In a world where most humans on the planet develop superpowers soon after they’re born, Izuku Midoriya was one of the few who never developed any powers. As a child, Midoriya wished to become a superhero like his idol, All Might, once he developed his Quirk.

As such, he was devastated once he learned that he’d never get any powers. His lack of a Quirk made him a prime target for bullying. However, Izuku decided he still wanted to be a hero and wished to go to the prestigious U.A. hero academy.

Ten months before the entrance exams for U.A. started, and Izuku came face to face with All Might after being saved from a villain by him. However, the same villain from before ended up breaking free and attacking one of Izuku’s classmates.

Despite not having powers, Izuku still tried to attack the villain. After this, All Might decided that Izuku could become a hero, with his help. He decided that he would grant Izuku his own Quirk to help him achieve his dreams.

After ten months of training, All Might passed his Quirk, One for All, down to Midoriya. He then managed to pass the entrance exam and officially enrolled in U.A, taking on the Hero name “Deku”.

It all depends on how you see it. While Midoriya has indeed managed to awaken the latent Quirks of the previous users of One for All, these Quirks cannot be considered separate. They are all a part of Deku’s quirk One for All.

Taking that into consideration, Midoriya has just one Quirk called One for All. This is his main Quirk, whichever way you decide to look at it.

However, that one Quirk indeed has 7 different manifestations.

The original Quirk of the first bearer of One for All, Inherito, and his forced Quirk Power-Stack mutated into a single Quirk. After this original user, there have been a total of 8 users of One for All. Out of these, only 6 have their own Quirks. This leaves a total of 7.

As of the latest chapter, Deku has managed to manifest all 7 (or 8 – depends on how you look at the 1st Quirk) Quirks.

How can Deku use all 7 Quirks simultaneously? How are they stronger than when used originally?

The core of One for All has grown in strength after being passed from user to user. The Quirk Factors of all previous users have merged into the core, granting the current user, i.e., Izuku Midoriya/Deku, the ability to access and use these Quirks simultaneously.

The Quirks have significantly increased in strength since they were used by their original users; this is due to the nature of One for All’s core stockpiling power and increasing in strength from user to user.

This is why, when Deku uses, say, the Gearshift of the Second User, it is way faster than when the Second User used it himself.

The One for All basically amplifies Quirks, making them stronger and better than when they were originally used.

The scope of Gearshift broadened to such a degree that Deku was able to use Transmission on a wide range of targets. When he used Detroit Smash: Quintuple it was like he was hitting “Tomura” while ignoring any laws of inertia – the speed was simply too fast.

Overall, at this point in the series, Izuku Midoriya aka Deku is absolutely busted with 7 Quirks. I can’t wait to see where he goes from here.
