Oscar Isaac makes his debut as the formidable Moon Knight, who is granted his powers by the Egyptian god Khonsu. Right from Isaac’s acting to the mingled moments of action and comedy, Episode 1 was definitely phenomenal but may have left you with more questions than ever. It’s not your fault, as the show massively strayed from the comic book canon.
So we’re now acquainted with Steven… but who is Marc, what is that voice in his head, and who is the mummy lookalike?
In Moon Knight, Steven Grant is the main personality. In the comics, he has four other important personalities: Marc Spector, Mr. Knight, Jake Lockley, and Moon Knight. However, the show has teased using only three of these personalities for the time being.
In order to enjoy the rest of the show, understanding Steven’s personalities is vital. So let’s get into it:
1. Steven Grant
The sweet, clumsy, and at times naive Steven Grant could not be any more different from his comic book counterpart. For one, the show is trying to establish that Steven is the main personality that controls his body most of the time.
While he is a suave millionaire who hangs out with the elite in the comics, Steven in the show is barely able to hold his measly job and lives in a dingy studio flat. Steven was thus far unaware of his other personalities, but knows that he suffers from some condition that gets him into trouble when he falls asleep. Of course, by the end of Episode 1, he’s starting to learn the truth about himself.
And yes, I know, this personality makes you go, “Protect Steven Grant at all costs.” I agree.
2. Marc Spector
In the comics, Marc spectator is the dominant personality who “allows” the others to come to play when the situation calls for it.
It is also interesting that in the early iterations, Marc does not have dissociative identity disorder (DID) but rather puts on these other personalities just because it was easy to navigate his missions that way. Of course, that changed in the later comics when Marc was identified with having the mental ailment.
But perhaps the most important fact about Marc is that he is Khonsu’s chosen champion. The episode stresses on this several times as well, when the voice in Steven’s head (which is Khonsu) orders Steven to give up control to Marc—who gets the work done.
Marc also has romantic ties with Layla El-Faouly (May Calamawy) who will appear on the show to reveal his backstory. It was also Layla who called Steven on the mysterious phone in Episode 1.
PS: Marc is the guy we see in the mirror.
3. Mr. Knight
We haven’t met Mr. Knight yet, but in all likelihood, we’ll see him in the next episode. He’s the one with the cool, white suit and crescent moon emblem on his head.
In the comics, he’s the personality who interacts with civilians as well as sits in sessions with Marc’s psychiatrist. He also has a bit of a detective vibe going on.
Although the show is making quite an effort to stray away from the canon, I think they’ll preserve Mr Knight as the charismatic, fan-favorite personality that he is.
4. Jake Lockley
Jake Lockley is a street-smart cab driver in New York. As this persona, he’s able to get information off the streets and mingle without being targeted as a vigilante. Jake is also extremely great at keeping secrets from the other personalities.
It’s possible we might not see Jake in the show, but parts of his personality can be seen in Steven. He has lent the character the ability to blend in and be a common man whom nobody would suspect.
Some fans are still vying for Jack to appear, while others think Jake and Steven could be the same personality. We’ll know for sure in the coming episodes!
5. Moon Knight
Let’s tackle the mummy-bandage guy with the grand cape. We finally see the avatar at the end of Episode 1, bloodily incapacitating a demon dog. This is the titular Moon Knight.
He’s supposed to be the personality that wields Khonsu’s divine powers and is not afraid to get down and dirty. He’s one to be feared and known to make impulsive decisions, resulting in unnecessary bloodshed.
Since the show has been rated PG-13, I’m betting it will take that label seriously to show us just exactly how ruthless Moon Knight can be.
6. Will we see all of Moon Knight’s personalities?
Like I mentioned above, the show may have room for only three personalities (as teased in the end-credits image below). Steven and Marc are confirmed. Which of the above will make the cut?
Find out in the next episode of Moon Knight, airing April 6.
