How long does it take to beat Stray? Main Story & 100% Completion

Stray is unique in many respects. Sure, it’s a good old single-player third-person adventure game, but who you control as the player isn’t a human or even a humanoid. It’s a stray cat.

Developed by BlueTwelve Studio, published by Annapurna Interactive, and directed by Koola and Viv, Stray might be an indie game, but it’s every cat-lover gamer’s dream.

You lead your cat-player through a city that is equal parts futuristic, dystopian, sordid, and awesome, solving puzzles and combatting cyber creatures.

If you’re here, you probably want to know the duration of this game before diving into Stray.

It takes only 5 hours to beat the main story of Stray. If you want to play the side quests and extras, it will take you an additional 1.5 hours. A completionist run (100% gameplay) of Stray, including obtaining all collectibles and trophies, will take 10 hours.

1. Is it possible to beat Stray in 2 hours?

Stray Speedrun

Stray can also be completed in 2 hours flat. The game contains a trophy called I Am Speed that players can obtain only if they finish the game within 2 hours.

Note that the I Am Speed trophy is the final trophy and can be attained only after you complete the main story and have obtained all other collectibles and trophies from the chapters. Make sure that you start a new game and then complete it in 2 hours. Playing your previous or original game within 2 hours won’t get you the trophy.

You can, of course, speedrun the whole game in the first place and finish it in even lesser than 2 hours.

The shortest time some players claim to have taken is a whopping 45 minutes, but these claims have been unverified.

There are also a few glitches that speedrunners have taken advantage off; for example, there’s a glitch that lets you bypass a chapter called the Slums, which can lower your playtime.

But why you’d want to speedrun a game like Stray is beyond me. When you get to prance around as a cat, might as well take full advantage of it.

2. How many chapters are there in Stray? How long to complete them?

There are a total of 12 chapters in Stray. Each of them is about 20-30 minutes long. The time it takes to complete each chapter depends on how quickly you can finish puzzles and how good you are at, well, being a cat.

Here are the chapters:

  • Chapter 1: Inside The Wall
  • Chapter 2: Dead City
  • Chapter 3: The Flat
  • Chapter 4: The Slums

4. Does Stray have an endgame? What to do after playing Stray?

Stray endgame

Unlike most games, after the main campaign, the game is truly and fully over. Stray does not have an endgame.

You have to start a new game, replay your old one, or go back to a previous chapter and pick up remaining collectibles or trophies.

You might not have had the time to collect all the trophies in the duration of the main story. So, after you complete Stray, you can select individual chapters for chapter-related trophies or explore the neon-lit alleys of the unique cybercity and look for collectibles and miscellaneous trophies.

If you are a completionist or are aching for a challenge, start a new game and try and obtain the final gold trophy, I Am Speed. As mentioned, you can gain this trophy by finishing the game in under 2 hours.

5. Does Stray have replayability? Is Stray worth the price?

Stray replayability

When you’re done with everything, including the 2-hour challenge, you should try starting a new game. Stray, even though an extremely short game, has great replay value, and this is what makes it worth its price.

There are tons of things to do in a new game, like finding all the memories of your drone companion, B-12, hanging out in free-to-roam areas, and doing whatever you like – basically, just being a cat for cat’s sake.

There are players that have spent a combined total of 50-60 hours on Stray having played it twice or thrice, and this is definitely worth the $30 you spend on it.

Some people do think that $30 is a bit steep for a game that can essentially be completed in 2 hours. But with Stray, you’re paying for the experience, the feline experience, more than the game itself.

Granted, if you weren’t playing as a cat, the game would probably never have done this good. But the game isn’t just a cat simulator. It has puzzles, a banging cyberpunk city, superb world-building, and stunning graphics.

Depending on different playstyles, Stray’s average playtime is anywhere between 5-10 hours. I’d say, given everything, the game is worth the price.

In case you don’t know – you can also get Stray for free if you have a paid subscription to PlayStation Extra. PlayStation owners can pay $15 – half the price of the game – and get a 1-month subscripting to PS+. Stray comes free with it.
