The Last of Us has never been more trending, with the episodes of the live action adaptation releasing weekly on HBO. The series stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as leads Joel and Ellie respectively and it adapts the story of The Last of Us Part I. The second season of the show will most likely adapt Part II.
Due to all the recent hype, you might be wanting to jump back into the world of The Last of Us by playing the sequel. The Last of Us Part II follows Ellie as she embarks on a relentless quest for revenge. If you’re wondering how long it takes to beat the sequel, then you’re at the right place.
If you’re aiming to complete just the main story of The Last of Us Part II, then you’ll require around 24 hours. Doing both main missions and side content will take you around 29 hours and a completionist run of the game will take around 42 hours.
Your playtime might differ from the numbers given above due to factors such as difficulty. More information on how the difficulty impacts your completion time is given below.
1. Difficulty
The Last of Us Part II offers you five default difficulties to choose from before you start your journey, and they are:
- Very Light
- Light
- Moderate
- Hard
- Survivor
- Grounded
Very Light is the easiest of the lot while Grounded is the hardest. If you choose to play the game on a harder difficulty, your completion time will increase as you might get stuck on some encounters. We suggest playing the game on Moderate difficulty and then replaying it again on a harder difficulty for the best experience. But if you’re confident enough in playing on a harder difficulty, go for it!
2. Is The Last of Us Part II a hard game?
The Last of Us Part II can be very challenging even on the easier difficulties. The mechanics are somewhat similar to the first game, but the enemy AI is better in the sequel which could lead to some brutal encounters.
Survivor difficulty makes enemies more aggressive and harder to kill so if you’re starting the game on Survivor difficulty, be prepared for an unforgiving experience. The Last of Us Part II, in conclusion, is a hard game to master and encounters can still be pretty challenging even when you’ve mastered the mechanics of the game.
3. How many endings does The Last of Us Part II have?
The Last of Us Part II has only one ending. The ending features Ellie returning to her farmhouse only to find Dina and JJ gone with all of their possessions. The only things remaining are Ellie’s belongings. Ellie roams the house for a bit and then tries to play Joel’s guitar but fails to do so due to two of her fingers missing as a result of Abby biting them off in the final fight.
The game then cuts to a flashback sequence which features Ellie having an emotional conversation with Joel, in which she tells Joel that she’ll try to forgive him for all the things he did. Back to the present day, we see Ellie sitting in the farmhouse with the guitar after which she gets up, leaves the guitar and everything behind and sets out into the woods.
4. Is The Last of Us Part II longer than Part I?
For a third-person single-player linear game, The Last of Us Part II is very long. The Last of Us Part I clocks in at 14 hours while Part II clocks in at 24 hours, so Part II is almost twice as long as Part I.
For 100% completion, Part I takes around 29 hours while Part II takes around 42 hours, so The Last of Us Part II is much longer than Part I. The story’s not just longer, but more intense too in Part II and the game is more ambitious than its predecessor in all aspects.
5. Will there be a Last of Us Part III?
The Last of Us Part III is definitely on the way but not very soon. In April 2021, Neil Druckmann (Creative Director of The Last of Us Part II) confirmed that an outline for the story of Part III is already done but the game is not in development as of now.
Naughty Dog is hard at work on The Last of Us Multiplayer game which Neil Druckmann mentioned was their most ambitious title. Work on the game started before The Last of Us Part II shipped so even though Part III is long from being officially announced, news of the Multiplayer title should excite fans of the series.
6. 100% Completion
The Last of Us Part II is pretty lengthy for a linear game with no side missions. Here’s everything you need to do in order to complete the game in its entirety:
