Jupiter’s Legacy premiered on Netflix on May 7. The series is based on the Image Comics series by Mark Millar and Frank Quitely.
Jupiter’s Legacy follows the story of the world’s first superheroes who received their powers in the 1930s. In the present day, they are the revered elder guard, but their superpowered children struggle to live up to the legendary feats of their parents.
If the show feels like it has a similar vibe to DC or Marvel stories and characters, it’s because writer Mark Millar has an old link with both.
Millar’s DC credits include The Flash, JLA, Superman: Red Son. His work with Marvel includes The Ultimates, The Avengers, and Captain America: Civil War. Millar’s other works include Wanted, Kick-Ass, and Kingsman: Secret Service, to name a few.
In his latest interview with CNet’s Richard Trenholm, Millar said that even Stan Lee didn’t recommend sticking around forever. In fact, he advised Millar to strike out his own.
“After writing Marvel’s biggest books, I had an audience I could siphon off…I just thought I’m going to treat everything I’ve done up to this point as a training exercise.”
Mark Millar
In 2010, he left his Marvel work-for-hire contract, working full-time on Millarworld. Jupiter’s Legacy was first published in 2013 as a series of eponymous limited series and interstitial prequel miniseries.
Millar was influenced by Star Wars, King Kong, and origin stories from the Golden Age of Comics. He was also influenced by Roman mythology.
He described the story as evoking the generational conflict of Hamlet and would explore the question of “what it would be like to grow up as Wonder Woman and Superman’s kids”, particularly the difficulty in living up to the legacy of previous generations.
Ahead of the premiere, Netflix made a press release, in which Millar stated:
“‘This has to be the greatest superhero story of all time.’ When I started work on Jupiter’s Legacy in 2012, this was the first line I wrote in my notepad. When my wife, Lucy, and I sold Millarworld to Netflix in 2017, our first priority was Jupiter’s Legacy. Although I’ve seen cut after cut, I’ve never once grown tired of watching what this dream cast and crew have assembled. I hope you love it as much as I do.”

If you have already binged the entire season, you’d be delighted to know Season 2 is on the cards. Millar has revealed that he is already working on a second series. “Next year, there will be Jupiter Season two. There will be The Magic Order, a horror show, and a big spy project,” Millar told The Herald Magazine.
