With an ever-growing universe featuring 30 films and eight TV series, keeping track of everyone’s whereabouts in the MCU can be challenging. That’s an issue some fans face following the release of the first trailer for Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3, as Zoe Saldana’s Gamora is set to return to the intergalactic band of heroes.
Is Gamora alive?
Gamora is alive in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 because this is the version of Gamora from 2014, and not the version killed by Thanos to get hold of the Soul Stone.
Gamora will be in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Still, it is a past variant of the character from 2014, not the original one who was sacrificed by Thanos for the Soul Stone in Avengers: Infinity War.
The fate of the original Gamora was left hanging after the events of Avengers: End Game, but the 2014 variant was brought to the future with Thanos and company.
Avengers: Endgame followed events five years later. While trying to bring everyone back from the blip, Nebula unwittingly alerted an alternate version of herself and, by extension, another Thanos and Gamora.
The Gamora variant that entered the main MCU timeline is not the same as the one lost in Infinity War, but she isn’t so different either. This Gamora came in 2014, just before she met Peter Quill and the rest of the Guardians. So, by extension, this Gamora may have the same capacity for good and heroism as the one with the Guardians for four years.
Is 2014 Gamora replacing the one in Infinity War?
Despite this being an almost identical, younger version of the Guardian Gamora, 2014 Gamora has had different experiences than her variant. When Gamora met Quill in 2014, she lived in the shadow of her tyrannical father figure, Thanos. She found a new family willing to protect her in the Guardians.
Since then, they bonded as misfits, faced down Ronan and won, unleashing the power of the Power Stone, and learned about Quill’s true parentage, and that was just the big moment on screen.
Most of the growth and familiarity that formed for the Guardians of the Galaxy was in their adventures together. At the end of Endgame, 2014’s Gamora may have turned her back on Thanos, but we saw her turn her back on the Guardians too.
It’s still being determined how she will meet the Guardians in GOTG Vol. 3, but it’s clear from the trailer that they are fighting for the same side. She may organically form a connection with Peter Quill’s Star-Lord and the others again. However, she may have found someone else in her time away since she didn’t have the same attachments.
Gamora has been missing from the Guardians’ past two adventures.
While Gamora may return in Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3, she has been missing from their recent exploits. Most notably, she was absent from Thor: Love And Thunder – where the Guardians made a cameo appearance – and The Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special.
Gamora’s absence in Thor and the Holiday Special is tough on Peter Quill as he has been out of sorts since she disappeared.
What Gamora’s return means for the Guardians of the Galaxy 3?
The trailer was released on December 1st, 2022. Director James Gunn’s comments about the plot confirm that this film will be about looking back as much as it focuses on running forward. Mantis tells Peter, “Don’t forget… where we came from,” as a young Rocket is shown. Gamora is also seen staring at a photograph, very likely of her with her former team.
This film will focus on where members like Rocket Raccoon came from and mirror Gamora’s journey looking at a life she hadn’t lived yet. This will confront and challenge the whole team, especially Quill, her main love interest.
However, it will show how this version of Gamora resembles her variant. Ultimately, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be an emotional exploration of the team and a send-off to the original cast and director, who have been a part of these films for almost a decade.

Will Poulter and Chukwudi Iwuji will join the cast as Adam Warlock and The High Evolutionary.
