How I Met Your Father S2 Episode 2: Release Date, Recap & Speculation

How I Met Your Father returned to Hulu this Tuesday with a brand-new season, and if you thought seeing Robin was a big surprise think again! The legendary Barney Stinson made a cameo in the last moments of the season 2 premiere, right about when Sophie hits rock bottom as she doubts she might be dating her father.

The eventful life of the photographer picks up exactly where we left her after splitting with Drew, kissing Jesse, meeting Robin, and getting her heart broken when she finds Jesse kissing his ex. Her messy love life will undoubtedly go through various ups and downs in the next 19 episodes, so what can we expect next in episode 2?

1. Episode 2 Synopsis/Speculation

In season 2, the only constant couple going strong seems to be Sid and Hannah, and while they’ve had their ups and downs, married life might drive them closer than ever. But what will that mean for the two while Hannah is still stuck in LA and Sid is trying hard to keep the bar afloat?

Episode 2’s title definitely hints at the mid-life crisis Sophie will have when she realizes she might be dating her father, but we feel like it’s not yet about that. We might see her discussing with Valentina how they need to level up their love life since they’re already in their 30s.

Speaking of Valentina, we can expect a friends-with-benefits situation coming up between her and Charlie. But we know it isn’t sustainable, and they may come to the same realization soon after.

Barney Stinson’s cameo leaves more way for him to appear again, and the show’s craters have already revealed he’ll be a guest star for more than one episode, unlike franchise alumni Robin Scherbatsky. We’re excited to see him in upcoming episodes!

The next episode’s title also suggests a mysterious pregnancy, which we think is hinting at Meghan Trainor’s guest appearance, which the S2 trailer teased. But when is the upcoming episode supposed to be available for streaming?

5. Episode 1 Recap

The season 2 premiere picks up right where we left the characters after the season 1 finale, with Sophie at her first gallery exhibition after splitting with Drew and getting her heart broken by Jesse. She bumps into Ian, who’s back from Australia, and informs him she’s currently single and agrees to get a drink with him.

Sid and Hannah return to Pemberton’s to celebrate their wedding party, with their friends joining them and helping Sid create a memorable night. Charlie and Valentina valiantly try to stay “bros,” but while creating a tribute to Sid and Hannah make out but don’t end up back together.

Jesse explains to Sid how he thinks he wants to pursue the tour with Meredith, while Sophie dodges him while trying to hit it back with Ian. The wedding party doesn’t go as planned when Drew shows up drunk and Sophie’s attempt to cheer Sid and Hannah on their special night goes sideways. 

Sophie lets Ian down and agrees to take a break from dating, telling Valentina how she’s hit rock bottom during the electric slide. But future Sophie points out her lowest point was yet to come when she believes she’s dating her father and ends up crashing into Barney.

6. About How I Met Your Father

How I Met Your Father (HIMYF) is a spinoff series of the incredibly successful CBS show, How I Met Your Mother. The original show ran for nine seasons, from 2005 to 2014, quickly making its mark with a dedicated cult-like fanbase.

HIMYF was announced to start production in April 2021 with the Lizzy McGuire star Hilary Duff playing the lead called Sophie, narrating her journey to her children in the future.

The show’s flashbacks will start from Sophie and her close friends navigating love, life and struggles in the modern era of dating, paying bills and more, in 2021.

Created by writers Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger of This Is Us fame and directed by the original show’s director, Pamela Fryman, the first season of HIMYF is revealed to have 10 episodes. No further details have yet been released.
