How Does Goku Earn Money to Support His Family?

It’s surprising to think of Goku, one of the strongest beings in the universe, needing a job to support his family. But as they say- money makes the world spin around.

Even the supreme Saiyan race cannot escape the material world and pangs of hunger. How does Goku get the money to care for Gohan and Goten (who eat food fit for a feast)? What does he do?

How Does Goku Earn Money to Support His Family?

Throughout the Dragon Ball series, the Son family has had various sources of income. Early on, Chi-Chi’s father, the Ox-King, supported them with his wealth. However, after the Ox-King lost his fortune, Goku turned to farming, growing radishes to cover family expenses.

In addition to farming, Goku earned prize money from martial arts tournaments. After major battles, Hercule Satan also provided financial gifts to Goku, further supporting them. These diverse income streams allowed Goku to care for his family over time.

Having A King as His In-Law

At the start of Dragon Ball, we see that Goku meets Chi-Chi and her father, the Ox-King. A giant of a man with immense wealth, the Ox-King provided a luxurious life for his family who reside in the grand castle on Fire Mountain.

Throughout the Dragon Ball series, the Ox-King’s wealth covered Goku’s family expenses (especially during Goku’s many absences, such as his deaths in battle). With Goku constantly out of the picture, Chi-Chi’s father stepped up financially, ensuring the family wasn’t left wanting.

The Ox-King often dotes on his grandsons, and we see him constantly pampering them during his many appearances. But in Dragon Ball Super, the Ox-King is reduced to a common person due to a massive fire as all his wealth goes up in flames.

Goku: The Radish Farmer

With Ox-King no longer able to support them (he could barely take care of himself and his people), Chi-Chi started reprimanding Goku for his lackadaisical attitude and asked him to step up and be the breadwinner for once.

Goku is a simple man with few thoughts (none of them complex), but he is not educated, and there are few things he can do to earn money besides fighting. So Goku turned to the most primitive and sure-fire way – farming.

His choice of crop was radishes, a humorous nod to his fallen Saiyan brother Raditz. Goku isn’t the best father, but farming allowed him to help Chi-Chi and remain close to home.

Before this, Goku’s family relied on the prize money he had won from tournaments like the Tenkaichi Budokai. However, that money eventually ran out after the events of the Buu Saga, leading Goku to turn to this age-old profession.

While radish farming might seem odd for someone like Goku, who can destroy worlds with a finger snap, it has allowed him to support his family during the absence of the Ox-King’s financial infusions.

Friends and Winning Tournaments

Farming became Goku’s primary job, but it wasn’t the only way he made money. Throughout Dragon Ball Super, he received monetary gifts from Hercule Satan after major battles.

Hercule, Earth’s so-called “savior,” whose reputation has been upheld painstakingly by Goku and his sons, is always eager to look for opportunities to reward Goku for his help in saving the world. These payments likely allowed Goku to leave farming behind when he was away.

Additionally, there’s always the possibility that Bulma, one of Goku’s closest and oldest friends, is pitching in to help. Bulma is an inventor and a billionaire whose wealth and net worth are unknown and likely unrivaled. However, as Chi-Chi is a prideful woman, she likely refused any financial help from Bulma.

Whatever the way, Goku might be a terrible family man and a battle;e freak, but when the going got tough, he stepped up to provide for his family. (When he was alive, at least).
