It’s a clear sign that Doctor Strange 2’s ending and mid-credits scene were setting up a third standalone Strange film. This one may explore his new relationship with Clea and the repercussions of using the Darkhold (however short the time). I have a feeling that the big eye on his forehead won’t be the only thing surprising us.
But there’s a much bigger arc that these scenes set up too—Secret Wars, which I can only describe as a storyline with as many stakes on the line as Infinity War and Endgame.
The Incursion that Clea talks about in Doctor Strange 2’s mid-credits scene could be one that leads to the Avengers finding out about the Secret Wars, which was fought between the Beyonders and Doctor Doom.
By now we’re already familiar with what Incursions are (big, bad catastrophes that occur when the boundaries of two universes are tipped off the scales).
But why are these Incursions important in the MCU? How will it be used to set up the next big Avengers film? Here’s everything you need to know:
What are the Secret Wars?
There are two Secret Wars storylines in the Marvel comics. But because the MCU has prominently introduced Incursions, it’s more likely that the 2015 Secret Wars will be adapted.
Long story short, the number of Incursions increase tenfold and for the longest time, no one knows why they were happening. Slowly it is revealed that the Incursions have been caused by a series of “secret wars” between the Beyonders (omnipotent aliens who dwell outside the multiverse) and Doctor Doom.
The Incursions ultimately lead to the whole multiverse ending, save for a new place called the Battleground which is patched together by Doctor Doom from pieces of the other universes.
Now the big downside to this is that Doctor Doom ascends to a God-like position. The Avengers who survive and are on Battleground now try to reverse/mend the situation to bring back the multiverse—so yeah, almost like Endgame but not quite.
Talks about introducing Doctor Doom into the MCU have been on for some time, so this may be a step in that direction.
How the MCU May Use Loki to Adapt the Secret Wars
So Doctor Strange 2’s mid-credits scene is not the first (or second, if you count Sinister Strange’s Incursion) Incursion we will see. In fact, we may be getting minor updates on Incursions happening in the background of several MCU movies coming up.
(In that sense, it is totally possible that Clea was mistaken about the Incursion being caused by Strange when in actuality it was caused by the Secret Wars.)
What may happen is that slowly the Avengers will start noticing more and more of these Incursions happening and may investigate its cause, leading up to discovering the Secret Wars.
What I personally think is that they’ll switch using Kang the Conquerer from Loki instead of the Beyonders. Kang is messing with the multiverse as well which could easily lead to the Incursions and opposition from Doctor Doom.
But it is also worth considering that the MCU may finish off Kang’s arc sooner than later since he is attached to Ant-Man 3.
In any case, even though the MCU may be setting up Secret Wars, don’t expect an Endgame level movie just yet. Remember it took several years/movies for the MCU to build the epic two-parter up.
Watch out for more hints as they do so for Secret Wars as well!
