Halo Episode 5 Teases the Spartan Program

Throughout Episodes 4 and 5 of Halo, we saw Master Chief, aka John, trace back his origins through various means. Like us, even John has always wondered where he’s from and how he ended up with the UNSC as a super soldier.

Episodes 4 and 5 give a tiny glimpse of the answer, which isn’t surprising. We already know that Dr. Halsey has always stood for nothing but her own motives. So, it is not a big revelation that she doesn’t care much for John as a person and treats him like her biggest scientific experiment.

For the last couple of episodes, the origins of the Spartan program were a mystery to us. However, after looking at Soren and how he ran away from the facility, it was rather obvious that the Spartan program was problematic.

Episode 5 confirms this and gives us a partial answer as to how it all started. Let’s jump in.

Halo Episode 5 shows Dr. Halsey’s team kidnapping John, aka Master Chief, from Eridanus II, his home when he was a child. The episode also mentions a Reach for Life Mission, which could connect with Halsey’s program.

In Episode 4, when Dr. Halsey and John are in his home, Cortana recreates his home and memories through simulation. However, after a point, it’s his own mind projecting them. Here, he sees how Halsey talked to John when he was a kid.

John’s suspicions about Halsey’s intentions have been growing in the back of his head since he touched the artifact. This incident merely strengthens them, and he doesn’t appreciate the fact that Halsey never told him this.

John manages to find the artifact by the end of the episode, and Episode 5 picks up from there. In this, we see Master Chief touch the artifact, which is stronger than the previous one, to know what exactly happened to him.

When he does so, the artifact releases a surge of energy where he’s taken back to the day when Halsey’s men kidnaped him.

These were masked men who could be soldiers of the UNSC. John tries to fight off and run away, but the scientist grabs him and injects him with a sedative.

With this, Master Chief’s memory surge comes to an end, and you can see that he is filled with rage. There isn’t much else revealed in the show, but a confrontation between the two is likely. Perhaps, that’s when we’ll know the truth.

However, since honesty is not one of the qualities that our cold and calculative scientist possesses, she might even lie to the Spartan leader. In the games, the Spartans were young children kidnapped, brainwashed, and raised as super soldiers.

Although the TV series follows the same premise, it’d be fascinating to delve a little deeper and understand the need for the program and how it originated.
