House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 5: Ser Alfred Broome’s Importance Explained

“I know you will never accept the Hightower claim.”

“Not while I live, Your Grace.”

Ser Alfred Broome is one of the most vocal members of Rhaenyra’s council in House of the Dragon season 2, and there are good reasons for this. British actor Jamie Kenna portrays Broome, one of the minor characters in House of the Dragon.

Rhaenyra has been in dire need of allies since the start of the Dance of the Dragons, and numerous new minor characters have been added to the rotation to serve as representatives of these forces. Ser Simon Strong, for instance, has been introduced by Daemon’s Harrenhal plotline.

The lords and knights of the houses closest to Dragonstone and Driftmark geographically make up most of Rhaenyra’s small council.

Many of them took oaths to King Viserys years ago, and their proximity to Rhaenyra makes them staunch supporters of her cause.

Many of Rhaenyra’s allies, including Lord Staunton, a member of her council, were killed by the Greens’ army in “The Red Dragon and the Gold.” Ser Alfred Broome has become the most outspoken member of her council as its size has shrunk.

1. What is the importance of Ser Alfred Broome in Rhaenerya’s Small Council?

In the absence of Daemon and Corlys, and following Rhaenys’ death, Alfred Broome has posed a common challenge to Rhaenyra in her small council, frequently acting as a contrarian.

Broome makes chauvinist statements about women’s ability to lead during conflict in episode 5, and he has consistently expressed his outrage at her decisions throughout season 2.

Alfred Broome is a knight from House Broome who has served on Dragonstone’s garrison for decades, dating back to King Jaehaerys’ reign, approximately 20 years before the program began.

2. Does Ser Alfred Broome Betray Rhaenyra?

There has to be a betrayal angle, duh!

Alfred Broome’s ongoing animosity toward Rhaenyra is foreshadowing his impending betrayal. The ending of Season 2, Episode 5 saw Rhaenyra send him away to meet with Daemon at Harrenhal, which he regarded as an insult, as if he was being punished for his behavior.

This will most certainly continue to cause division between them. Rhaenyra’s primary goal is to seize King’s Landing, which she will do at some point, most likely in season 3, and she will need to leave a force on Dragonstone to represent her name.

As a senior member of Dragonstone’s guard, Alfred Broome expects to be left as castellan of Dragonstone. Instead, she selects Ser Robert Quince, who hasn’t appeared yet on the show.

When Rhaenyra captures King’s Landing, King Aegon is forced to flee the city, and he and his dragon Sunfyre take refuge on the island of Dragonstone. He did so by promising Broome wealth and lordship for protection. Broome then participated in a coup against Robert Quince, seizing the castle. He also attempts to kill Baela’s dragon, Moondancer.

Rhaenyra finally returns to Dragonstone during the disturbances in King’s Landing, and she is stunned to learn what has occurred there. Rhaenyra believes Broome is an ally, so he escorts her to the castle, captures her, and kills her men.

He then takes her to Aegon II and Sunfyre, who kills her with Dragonfire. Aegon II then holds Rhaenyra’s son, Aegon III, hostage before returning to King’s Landing with Broome.

3. What Happens To Alfred Broome?

Aegon, like Rhaenyra, is not the winner of the Dance of the Dragons. When Aegon II returns to King’s Landing, he is betrayed and slain, and Rhaenyra’s son, Aegon III, is installed on the Iron Throne.

But not before Aegon II attempts to have Aegon III’s ears severed, which he employs Alfred Broome to carry out. Fortunately, Alfred Broome is killed on his way to carry out these orders when he is forced into the ditch beneath the drawbridge at Maegor’s Holdfast, landing on spikes and dying over two days.

House of the Dragon fans have a lot to look forward to.

4. How does Season 2 Episode 5 End?

Rhaenyra Targaryen finds a glimmer of hope in the episode’s final scene, as her eldest son, Jacaerys Velaryon, comes up with an idea to replenish their forces. The Blacks may have lost one of their most experienced dragon riders, but what they aren’t short of is dragons.

The season 1 finale established that there are riderless dragons on Dragonstone and Driftmark, and season 2 has seen Seasmoke flying around aimlessly. Jace reminds his mother that they may be out of potential Targaryens, but others come from the Valyrian bloodline.
