House of the Dragon’s season finale leaked one day ahead of its release, to the dismay of HBO. And though they advised the show’s viewers to wait for the pristine 4K version, the excitement to know what lies ahead was just too much.
The final episode focuses solely on the Blacks and their answer to the Greens’ treachery. The only Green featured in episode 10 was Otto Hightower, who had come down to Dragonstone to dictate Alicent’s conditions for Rhaenyra.
Rhaenyra shared her stepmother’s thoughts on a non-violent solution over an outright war, but by the end of the finale, Rhaenyra’s path of vengeance would set season 2 ablaze with the Black Queen’s rage.
In episode 10, Rhaenyra sustains tremendous losses, one after the other, all while trying to keep a Kingdom intact which is on the verge of war. Learning of Viserys’ death from Rhaenys, Rhaenyra also faces the death of her unborn child, who comes too early.
Reeling from the two losses, she fights to preserve peace in a time when everyone around her wrought war, including her husband. She sends Jacerys and Lucerys to the three realms who need reminding of their allegiance to the Black Queen. Little did she know, she was sending one of her sons to his death.
Though Lucerys entered with no thoughts of fighting in Baratheon’s court, Aemond awaited him to collect the debt of his eye – the same which Lucerys had taken all those years ago.
In a dragon chase in stormy skies, Aemond chases his nephew atop Vhagar, and Lucerys knowing Vhagar outmatches Arrax tenfold, uses stealth and agility to make his escape. Aemond only wished to scare Lucerys, but after Arrax attacked Vhagar, the giant dragon went against her rider’s wishes and slayed both Luke and his dragon.
The episode ends with Daemon taking Rhaenyra aside and delivering the news of Aemond’s murder of her son. Though Rhaenyra succumbs to grief and pain momentarily, when she turns to face the camera again, a raging fire of revenge burns bright in her eyes.
Season 2 will probably begin with the aftermath of Luke’s death. Rhaenyra will now be less cooperative to Alicent’s schemes, and we’ll see what deviance the Black Queen is capable of.
House of the Dragon season 2 has no release date yet, but we expect it to hit HBO Max sometime in 2024.
