The fourth and final instalment in the Hotel Transylvania franchise, Transformania will be directly debuting on Amazon Prime Video, forgoing a theatrical release.
An exclusive from Variety, Sony Pictures Animation is reported to be in a 100 million USD deal with Amazon to have the film stream globally on its platform. According to an inside source, Sony will continue to retain its rights to home entertainment, linear TV and Chines exhibitions.
While Hotel Transylvania has been a commercial success since its first screening in 2012, Sony’s decision may have been influenced by Peter Rabbit 2’s underwhelming results at the box office. After initially deciding to delay the film to October 1, now it seems like direct-to-streaming may be a safer bet.
Adam Sandler won’t be joining in as Count Drac, as he did for the last three films. Drac will now be voiced by Brian Hull. Nonetheless, fans are still excited to see how the last chapter winds up the series. Reprising their roles will be Selena Gomez, Andy Samberg, Kathryn Han, Jim Gaffigan and others.
The “transformania” in the title refers to Samberg’s Johnny falling prey to a mysterious Monsterfication Ray that turns him into a dragon. The supernatural side is not spared either, as Drac and a few of our monster pals are transformed into humans. Will they be able to return to their “normal” selves before it’s too late?
As Sony does not have its own streaming platform, it has opted to allot its films to different streamers — Fatherhood and The Mitchells vs the Machines on Netflix, Greyhound on Apple TV+, Happiest Season on Hulu, and An American Pickle on HBO Max.
Now, Hotel Transylvania: Transformania will be joining Cinderella on Amazon Prime. A date has not been set, but its timeline of October 1 does fit in nicely with the Halloween spirit.
About Hotel Transylvania: Transformania
Hotel Transylvania: Transformania (also known as Hotel Transylvania 4) is an upcoming American computer-animated monster comedy film produced by Sony Pictures Animation. Intended to be the fourth and final installment in the Hotel Transylvania franchise. The film is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on October 1, 2021.
It is directed by Jennifer Kluska and Derek Drymon from a screenplay by Amos Vernon, Nunzio Randazzo, and Genndy Tartakovsky, and stars the voices of Brian Hull, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kathryn Hahn, Steve Buscemi, David Spade, Keegan-Michael Key, Asher Blinkoff, Brad Abrell, Fran Drescher, Jim Gaffigan, and Molly Shannon.
When Van Helsing’s mysterious invention, the “Monsterfication Ray”, goes haywire, Drac and his monster pals are all transformed into humans, and Johnny becomes a monster! In their new mismatched bodies, Drac, stripped of his powers, and an exuberant Johnny, loving life as a monster, must team up and race across the globe to find a cure before it’s too late, and before they drive each other crazy. With help from Mavis and the hilariously human Drac Pack, the heat is on to find a way to switch themselves back before their transformations become permanent.
