Hotel Transylvania 4 gets into the Halloween spirit as Sony moves its release to October 1. The fourth and final film in the franchise, Hotel Transylvania: Transformania, was previously slated for its theatrical release on July 23.
As reported by Variety, part of the reason for this delay might be due to the fact that portions of Canada still remain closed, and capacity restrictions average around 66%, L.A. and NYC are at 100% this weekend.
July 23 has other major releases, including M. Night Shyamalan’s Old, Snake Eyes, among others. Transformania moved to a weekend in line with the release of the long-awaited Dune and The Addams Family 2. It looks like Transformania is bound to face tough competition regardless of the date change.
Transformania centers around Drac and sees him lose his vampire sensibility and become human. It happens when Johnny decides to become a monster and seeks Van Helsing’s help. In the process, Drac gets in the crossfires of a malfunctioning ray and becomes a human.
Transformania will be the first film to not be directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, and Brian Hull will be replacing Adam Sandler as Dracula.
Last month, co-directors Jennifer Kluska and Derek Drymon spoke to CinemaBlend about why the change was needed.
Kluska explained that along with the cast change, Drac would also look and act differently than he has in the last three films,
“The way that Drac moves is so specific. He has this beautiful, fluid shape that’s almost a cylinder with a head on it. It’s so simple and gorgeous that it’s all very reflective of the character that’s very fluid and powerful.
When you take all that power away from him, and he becomes a human, the whole habitat changes the nature of the animation. So we purposely designed Drac in a way where he’s the total opposite of that. When he’s a human, he’s got these short shorts, and he’s got knobby knees and elbows, and he kind of becomes very awkward, and we really leaned into the realism.”

The first three installments of the Hotel Transylvania franchise have earned $1.3 billion worldwide. The upcoming fourthquel is directed by Jennifer Kluska and Derek Drymon, written by Genndy Tartakovsky, produced by Alice Dewey Goldstone, and executive produced by Selena Gomez, Genndy Tartakovsky, and Michelle Murdocca.

About Hotel Transylvania: Transformania
Hotel Transylvania: Transformania (also known as Hotel Transylvania 4) is an upcoming American computer-animated monster comedy film produced by Sony Pictures Animation. Intended to be the fourth and final installment in the Hotel Transylvania franchise. The film is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on October 1, 2021.
It is directed by Jennifer Kluska and Derek Drymon from a screenplay by Amos Vernon, Nunzio Randazzo, and Genndy Tartakovsky, and stars the voices of Brian Hull, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kathryn Hahn, Steve Buscemi, David Spade, Keegan-Michael Key, Asher Blinkoff, Brad Abrell, Fran Drescher, Jim Gaffigan, and Molly Shannon.
When Van Helsing’s mysterious invention, the “Monsterfication Ray”, goes haywire, Drac and his monster pals are all transformed into humans, and Johnny becomes a monster! In their new mismatched bodies, Drac, stripped of his powers, and an exuberant Johnny, loving life as a monster, must team up and race across the globe to find a cure before it’s too late, and before they drive each other crazy. With help from Mavis and the hilariously human Drac Pack, the heat is on to find a way to switch themselves back before their transformations become permanent.
