House of the Dragon’s season 1 finale was set to air on HBO Max this Sunday. But someone leaked the last episode online a day before the release, creating an uproar. Episode 10 introduced Vermithor in House of the Dragon, teasing his obvious importance in season 2.
But who is Vermithor? He’s only the biggest and oldest dragon after Aemond’s Vhagar! Vermithor is one of the oldest dragons in House of the Dragon, around a hundred years old at the time of Dance of the Dragons, and only smaller than Vhagar by a little.
King Jahaerys I rode Vermithor in his reign, but after his death before House of the Dragon, Vermithor was left riderless. After Jahaerys’ death, Vermithor lived in solidarity on Dragonstone, ready to be claimed by a brave dragon rider.
Daemon, of course, knew of Vermithor’s existence on Dragonstone, but since he had Caraxes, he never needed the older dragon.
But after the Greens declare war by usurping Rhaenyra’s throne, the Blacks need more battle-hardened dragons on their side. Though, as the finale reveals, the Blacks have thirteen dragons to the Greens’ four, but the Greens have a considerable advantage with Vhagar on their side.
Most of the dragons the Blacks possess have never seen any battle and thus are more temperamental and harder to control. We already get a glimpse of that when Arrax’s attacks Vhagar against Luke’s commands when threatened, costing him and his rider their lives.
If Daemon claims Vermithor for the Blacks, Rhaenyra and her allies will have at least a fair match against Aemond’s Vhagar, giving them a fighting chance at winning the Dance of the Dragons. Viewers will understand just how crucial it is for the Blacks to have a dragon as old, experienced, and fearsome as Vermithor on their side.
But will Daemon be able to claim Vermithor himself when he is already bound to Caraxes? George R.R. Martin’s book lore says a dragon rider cannot possess two dragons at once. The rider may take a second dragon after his first’s death, but he cannot claim another while his dragon lives.
If House of the Dragon ignores this rule, we know that clever and determined Daemon will have Vermithor on his wife’s team in season 2. But if the show follows the books, who will possess Vermithor for Team Black?
Well, according to the books, Hugh Hammer eventually claims him for Team Black, and Vermithor proves a formidable addition to Rhaenyra’s dragon army.
So, who do you think will bring Vermithor to the Blacks in season 2 – Hugh or Daemon?
Season 2 of House of the Dragon has no release date yet, but we expect it to air on HBO Max sometime in 2024.
