With a title like House of the Dragon, fans are full of expectations when it comes to these majestic winged creatures. The dragons are ever so powerful, helping to govern both kingdoms and entertainment. After all—“Dreams didn’t make us kings. Dragons did.”
But how many dragons will feature in the show? Can they outshine Daenerys’ dragons? Plus, will we see any iconic dragons?
House of the Dragon will have 17 dragons appearing through the course of the show. Although the names have not been disclosed, it is expected that dragons such as Syrax, Caraxes, Vhagar, Sunfyre, and more will feature in Season 1.
Let’s get into all the details about the dragons appearing on the show!
1. How many dragons are in the show?
Having three dragons on Game of Thrones seemed like a novelty, which is why it is super exciting to know that there will be 17 dragons in total appearing in House of the Dragon. However, it is possible that only nine will be featured in S1, while the rest will debut in the remaining seasons.
What the creators have promised us is that these dragons will have personalities and temperaments of their own, making them distinct characters in their own rights. You will also be able to associate them with their respective riders because of this aspect.
Here’s what creator Ryan J. Condal had to say about the dragons at the San Diego Comic-Con ‘22:
[quote] “So, it was important to differentiate them in not only the way they look and behaved and acted, [but also] the way they bonded with their riders. That was one of the earliest things Miguel and I started [conceptualizing] on.
This is probably about a year before we started filming, and it was a very organic process. We worked with a couple of conceptual designers and we just went through this very iterative process.”

2. Which Dragons will we see in the show?
While we may have an idea of 2-3 dragons that are confirmed for S1, the rest can only be speculation at this point, since the show has not released any additional information.
Some of the dragons are tied with surprise twists and turns, so I’ll make sure to keep this spoiler-free. In any case, here are the dragons you can expect to see:
1. Syrax
Syrax (named after a Valyrian goddess) is a large, golden-yellow dragon. Her first and only rider was Rhaenyra Targaryen, who bonded with her at the age of seven.
2. Sunfyre
This will be Aegon’s (Viserys’ son with Alicent and Rhaenyra’s step-brother) dragon. A totally regal-looking dragon that’s gold in color and shoots out golden flames.
3. Caraxes
Caraxes has had two riders, Prince Aemon and Prince Daemon, and we will be seeing the latter in the show. Also known as Blood Wyrm, this large red dragon is experienced in battle, having been a mount for the two princes.
4. Meleys
This dragon has a unique look, characterized by ruby tones all over with pink membranes. Nicknamed the Red Queen, she served Rhaenys, who is famously known as “The Queen Who Never Was.”
5. Dreamfyre
She is a slender, blue dragon with silver wings, whose second rider will be Helaena (Rhaenyra’s step-sister).
6. Moondancer
Serving Lady Baela, this dragon appeared pale green in color, with horns, crest, and wing bones that were pearl.
7. Morning
Morning is a young dragon who will hatch during the Dance of the Dragons arc, so we may only see her egg this season, or perhaps her hatching. Her scales were pale pink, with contrasting black horns and crest. Her rider was Lady Rhaena Targaryen.
8. Vhagar
This is another iconic dragon, bronze in color with green eyes. She was one of the three dragons that helped Aegon conquer Westeros. Her last rider would be Prince Aemond (Rhaenyra’s step-brother).
9. Seasmoke
This silver-grey dragon accepted Rhaenys Targaryen’s son, Laenor Velaryon, as his rider.
Most of the dragons above belong to characters appearing in S1. Other dragons that could make an appearance are Tessarion (Prince Daeron’s mount), Vermithor (The Old King Jaeherys I’s mount), Shrykos (Prince Jaehaerys’ mount), Morghul (Princess Jaehaera’s mount), and some wild dragons like Grey Ghost, Sheepstealer, and the Cannibal.
3. Will we see Balerion in the show?
Balerion is one of the most legendary dragons in the GoT universe. Also known as the Black Dread, King Aegon I Targaryen rode on his back during the Conquest of Westeros. He was also the last living dragon to have seen the Valyrian Freehold.
He eventually became the dragon of the young prince Viserys I but died within a year at the age of 200. Since he died in the year 94 AC, it is unlikely that he will be featured in House of the Dragon, where Viserys I is now an old king.
I wouldn’t mind seeing him in some flashbacks though—to have his mythical black fire on the screen would be a delight!
4. Will Drogon be in the show?
You may be itching to see some familiar dragons, and the Khaleesi’s personal mount has always been a fan favorite. However, Drogon will not be appearing in House of the Dragon, for the simple reason that he wasn’t born then.
House of the Dragon will start off somewhere during the 110s AC, while Drogon was born in 278 AC.
5. About House Of The Dragon
House of the Dragon is the prequel series to HBO’s blockbuster Game of Thrones based on George R. R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood.
Set three hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon will show Westeros under the Targaryen family’s rule before the dragons went extinct. It will follow the Dance of the Dragons, the Targaryen civil war between siblings Aegon II and Rhaenyra, who fought for the throne after the death of their father, Viserys I.
Directed by Ryan Condall and Miguel Sapochnik, the show stars Paddy Considine as Viserys I Targaryen, Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen, Tom Glynn-Craney as Aegon II Targaryen, Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower, Steve Toussaint as Corlys Velaryon, Eve Best as Rhaenys Velaryon, Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria, Fabien Frankel as Criston Cole, and Graham McTavish.
